Hon Samuel R Rotan a Republican official refuses to sanction John Asbury as an assistant in the office of the District Attorney. He cites lack of qualifications despite a creditable examination before the Law Committee. Rotan leaves it to his assistants who reportedly render a negative report.

The Wilmington Police Commissioners consider displaying The Birth of a Nation. objections cite racial tensions in the city and concerns over stirring trouble between black and white residents. Allemann, manager of The Irhnette, argues for exhibition while Councilman Hop e opposes. Local officials weigh ordinance limits on screening controversial films.
In Atlantic City New Jersey on January 10 fire gutted the four story colored Y M C A on Arctic avenue below Illinois. Firemen carried twelve men and three women down ladders in bitter cold as the building burned from top to bottom. The blaze near Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church led to a double alarm and a two hour battle leaving only the shell of the Y M C A building and an estimated ten thousand dollars in losses.
Mahoney, a Pittsburgh native now in Philadelphia, started at the Bellevue Hotel banquet circuit twenty one years ago. He later joined C J Heppe and Son before launching his own piano tuning and rebuilding service, training daughter Mary A Mahoney under Ida M B Yeocum.
Donner Brown, noted songwriter and composer on Linmore Street, West Philadelphia, adds to his musical family with twin daughters. The article notes the sisters and their father seen nightly with one on each knee as he teaches them to cultivate their musical talents.
One week ago a church meeting at Varick Temple attempted to oust pastor Rev Carruthers over alleged misappropriation of church funds. Charges followed his political ties and revival tensions led Bishops Caldwell and Blackwell to push for control of funds. Carruthers resigned while a disbandment motion passed. he reportedly refused to leave.
The National Negro Business League announces Kansas City as host for its August 16–18 1916 meeting. The Local League cites coosiding events with Masons Grand Lodge and National Medical Association, offering reduced rail fares and memorials for Dr Booker T Washington to open the first night. Harmony between M C A officials and colored residents boosts fundraising. Mr and Mrs A E Malone of Poro College Hair gave the largest single contribution, five thousand dollars, helping push totals well beyond expectations.
Washington lawmaker Roberta of Massachusetts has introduced a bill to appropriate 7500 dollars to purchase the suit Lincoln wore at Ford's Theatre when he was assassinated in 1865. The relic now belongs to a Washington businessman and would become a Lincoln Memorial exhibit.
New York Jan 8 Rev John Wesphnson vicar of St Cyprians invited men to meet H Moens of Holland a noted scholar and scientist studying the race question. Moens spent time in the South and West and plans to return to France to publish findings in a leading French newspaper with world circulation.
Historical Journal issued Washington January 17 announces the first issue of the Journal of Negro History born from Chicago’s Association for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. It includes works by Monroe N. Work and editor Carter G. Woodson.
Judge Smith in Chicago sustains the demurrer for Walter M. Farmer and Wm. Harrison recognizing the National Baptist Convention led by E. P. Jones. The ruling dismantles the Morris faction and validates Jones’s majority backed by officers and boards. Jones plans a Nashville meeting with advisors and officers.
Washington January 6 rumors swirl over who will lead the National Negro Business League after the death of the Tuskegee principal. J C Napier of Nashville Tennessee is favored, having chaired the Executive Committee and served as banker and lawyer.
Dr. C. V. Hinds an alumnus of Dartmouth College and former Mississippi state senator says he will relocate from Trenton because real estate owners and agents refuse to rent to him due solely to his race. He has studied at national institutions and traveled in Europe.
Monumental Lodge at 414 West Hoffman Baltimore reopened its newly rebuilt home after renovation. The three story structure includes a meeting room parlors billiard hall kitchen and frescoed walls with electric lighting and steam heating. Officials present include Geo W McMechen attorney William Lewis Douglass exalted ruler Mrs Anne Roberts Dr Norwood Duffin and William Johns. The property fronts 25 feet on Hoffman and runs back 143 feet and is touted as the best intact home for colored Elks in the country.
Pittsburgh January 10 Velaria is considered a candidate for the Board for the Revision of Taxes a county post. He has previously served as a school director and chairman.
In Washington Georgia on January 10 the case of Robert Kitchen a colored man sentenced to be hanged for murder drew a petition to the Supreme Court. His counsel argues that Georgia’s all white juries violated equal protection and that habeas corpus should have released Kitchen after conviction. The sheriff’s side defends the jury system as impartial and cites Leo Frank precedent.
Hampton Va January 11 The fifty third anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation was celebrated at Hampton Institute with over 1500 attendees. The program included reading of the Proclamation by Mrs Mamie Robinson songs praying remarks by Rev J T Johnson and Dr H B Frissell.
Delegates from the Eighth Episcopal district of the A M E Church meet in Jackson Mississippi to decide the candidate for bishop at Philadelphia next year. The top contenders are 8 P Felder of Mound Bayou and John J Morant of Vicksburg Felder leads as the vote nears.
Admiral Caperton reports improved conditions in Haiti with better outlook in the north. Cultivation has resumed and much land abandoned during revolutions is being reoccupied as the island regains activity.
A Salem Oregon resident notes two accomplished Black women in his home community. One is a pianist and the other a vocalist of note, with their families earning respect from Salem’s leading citizens. He observes they are always invited to public gatherings, reflecting inclusive social regard.
Baltimore providing district reports that Dr. Harry F. Brown was unanimously elected superintendent of Provident Hospital at the board meeting. He succeeds Dr. D Grant Scott and has nine years of local practice after graduating from Howard University Medical School.
In Phoenixville on January 12 Rev. J.H. Young led a sermon from Matthew 5:3 with the morning service well attended. The congregation reported strong youth involvement and a fruitful collection as they prepare for an upcoming fair. Miss Anna Cooper and Miss Amanda Foreman returned from Brooklyn. Also noted: Miss Fannie Foreman and Mrs. Sadie Randell have recovered from illness. The Lyceum met Friday with Mrs. S. E. Davis presiding. trustees met Monday at Mrs. Charles Heery’s home.
In colored Philadelphia critics accuse Southwest Branch executive secretary Henry W Porter of narrow, unchristian conduct. Reports cite employee dismissals and insults prompting calls for a mass petition to demand his removal, noting the need for a strong Ladies Auxiliary.
At Camp Valbonne Ain a young Ottawa man, 21, alias Henry Williams, serves in a regiment of foreigners. He lies with frozen feet and other permanent injuries from European War service, with possible death looming.
Tuskegee Alabama announces the Tuskegee Conference exercises will be held at the Institute on Wednesday January 19 1916. The program will vary from previous years with exhibits and demonstrations in the Agricultural Department and at Dorothy Hall. The latter venue will feature demonstrations aimed especially at women.
The Prayer Tagblatt reports Jack Johnson is in England working to recruit for the war effort. It says he can reach people, won’t lose support from the cabinet, and notes England relies on a colored boxer who is an American exile to gather recruits.
At the regular monthly meeting the Board of Directors elected the officers James W. Hughes as president and Dr Borns Langley and W Leotier among the slate discussed during the Thursday night session in Baltimore Md. January 12.
On January 15 the community of Burg Pennsylvania gathers to honor Mr. Auter as he closes faithful service in the governor's office. The Tribune sends best regards to the longtime public servant, noting his many years of steady work through seasons and winters.
The new St Catherine’s in Germantown shows early progress as parishioners gather at the chapel on Penn Street. Father Hartnett appoints representatives to visit members, with the Sodality starting at thirty three members and expanding as colored parishioners unite for growth and harmony.
A 9 year old girl from Saint Paul earns a gold medal as the Woman's Civic League honors her brave act. Hubbard district reports her as a local heroine who aided her brother during a fire at their home.
Jan C Ramsey of San Diego has been chosen as star inspector for Expositions. He will supervise under him a staff to oversee the event operations and safety.
Pennsylvania reports hog cholera quarantine coverage across seven counties and 175 premises. Farm wages average 1.45 a day with Franklin county highest at 2.25 a week. Potatoes reach a peak price per bushel in Cameron and Adams counties with averages and yields listed for several regions.
An average of four tons per acre was recorded in Philadelphia County, the strongest yield among counties. Lancaster followed with about a ton less, while Montour and five other counties averaged 3.5 tons.
