A political piece discusses urging African American voters to unite behind ex governor Stokes loyalists and a Polish candidate at the Bellevue-Stratford meeting amid party splits. It notes factions in the Republican committee and seeks to mobilize Black voters for a favorable outcome in upcoming contests.
Ike Murray reports in Washington DC that C Layer Fountain L Peyton a Black member of the school board testified before a Senate committee revealing frank criticisms of the assistant superintendent and citing reasons to remove Mr Bruce. Peyton said the board president pledged harmony but sought a way to ease Bruce out of the system.
Alexander H. King a parcel post clerk at 22nd and Market Streets Station was arrested for robbing the mails. A search of his home recovered about $2600 in stolen goods and pawn tickets linking him to other items from the crime. He was held on $1000 bail.
A Carlisle case in Common Pleas Court No 3 settles a leadership dispute in the Odd Fellows between Morris Needham of Chicago and Noel Nelson of Pennsylvania versus Noel Nelson and Robert J. Nelson of West Virginia. The fight centers on the 18th B M C meeting and council authority amid wartime disruption.
Thaddeus C. Sweet addressed a colored audience at the New York News Charity Bureau on 35th Street advocating constitutional law enforcement while lamenting rising disregard for law. A radical faction hissed him but was drowned by applause. Charles W. Anderson, former Port of New York Collector, was also hissed as he spoke in support of Assembly action on the Socialist expulsion.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People announces that meetings with the Colored Railroad Employees, the United States Railroad Administration, and the Southern Railway led to wage increases for colored railroad workers. The raises total about $125,000 in monthly pay and reach up to $12,525 per month for affected employees.
A large gathering at Central Presbyterian Church heard Rev. William Lloyd Imes preach on “What Makes a Noble Citizen” as the Citizens' Republican Club of Philadelphia attended the annual sermon. The pastor cited wealth, birth, and status as not defining true citizenship and offered examples to illustrate the point.
On Thursday at 220 W Coulter St Germantown Rev and Mrs Newben H Armstrong marked 40 years of marriage and 40 years since his ordination. He is pastor of Faith Presbyterian Church and a Lincoln University graduate ordained in 1880. Guests included family members and out of town attendees from Pittsburgh Harrisburg and Baltimore.
A mob of white men shot Charles Young, a Lakeville farmhand, after he acted erratically with a knife and mallet. He was taken to Morton Hospital in Taunton with five bullet wounds, in critical condition. He wounded two men earlier in Myricks.
Washington April 13. West a colored deckhand on the Steamer Southi was shot in the groin by Captain Eppa L. Dodson white of the Steamer Endeavor. Dodson says he fired to frighten West who he alleges meddled with workers. He was arrested and released on $1000 bail. Also reported, the Order of Eastern Stars met at Mrs Sadie A Stuart residence and visited the Dunbar Theatre as guests of manager G Grant Williams.
In New York on April 12 Kilala Columiane a Porto Rican lost an eyebrow in a shooting affray after a dance at the Blue Ribbon Social Club No 105 Fleet Place Brooklyn. He was knocked out for a time but revived by Dr Hoople of Brooklyn Hospital. John Tucker a World War veteran is jailed at Adams Street station on charges linked to the night’s disturbances.
Atlantic City reports a large meeting to raise funds for the Old Parks Home and a bronze tablet for Dr Payman. The piece notes political tension over potential election of a colored county official and describes reform activists setting up a Committee of 100 to back candidates while fearing a colored candidacy.
By request of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce Mesars EB G Brown Beresford Gate Walter Cassette and Chas R Bowie were invited to luncheon with Prince Lubomerski of Poland at the Bellevue Stratford. Colored guests sat at a prominent table and could see and hear the prince clearly. The prince expressed pleasure in meeting representative men of the community and praised the cordial treatment from Philadelphia's wealthiest citizens.
Lancaster April 12 The dream of Thaddeus Stevens, founder of a large industrial school, was realized when Edward K. Sebastian became the first colored student to graduate. The ceremony marked a diploma presentation to a Negro student and stated that students were not barred by face color or creed.
New York remembers Fifth Avenue week and notes that Solomon Peters a free negro once owned thirty acres between Twenty first and Twenty sixth streets and Broadway and Seventh avenues. His heirs sold the property in 1716 to John Horn and Cornelius Webber, whose Horn farmhouse stood near Twenty third Street until the avenue was cut through in 1839.
Carl Diton and Janine Maxwell entertained Sleighton Farm officers teachers and girls with a concert of exceptional merit. Dr Charles A Lewis and Mrs Mildred Lewis of Philadelphia attended. Eva Jo Washington sang a duet with Annette Johnson Matron of the Receiving Cottage.
New York April 12 Dr C G Vincent who trained at Bellevue was invited to demonstrate a new operation for varicose vein repair before members of the American Urological Association at its annual meeting in New York.
The Republican committee endorses John G. Asbury for State Legislature at Harrisburg. W. McCoach, council member, urges support. Lawrence Farrell presents Asbury’s petitions and qualifications. speeches by Crawford and McKeown. Asbury pledges anti lynching legislation and Civil Rights support.
