Francis W. Furman, famed numismatist, reported that six valuable coins vanished from his exhibition at the State Fair. Special Dispatch reports in New Castle that Sewell A. Starkey a colored man and James Kirk a white man were publicly whipped after burglary and larceny convictions. Starkey received twenty lashes and Kirk was whipped as well, with Starkey also placed in the pillory for an hour.
Francia P. Ryan, a Reading Railroad brakeman, was killed near Conshohocken while the crew were making a flying switch. His mangled body was brought to the city today.
