Police reveal a scheme by Ashbridge Durham man Nichols gang to threaten Representative-Elect Ray to vote for Matthew S. Quay. Lieutenant O'Brien alleges the group used terror to push the plan as part of a broader intimidation effort.
Mrs Byrde G Herrick testified before the grand jury detailing the Maison Zimmer divorce syndicate. She admitted posing as co respondent in the Sadie Gardner case, using the name Mamie Conway, and meeting Chester Gardner on Broadway. Other witnesses included referees Judge Donohue and Grosvenor Hubbs and stenographer Amos Russell. The investigation suggests many lawyers may be involved in similar frauds and another bogus divorce surfaced in the Supreme Court involving Carrie P D King who claims no suit was filed and says she was deceived into signing alimony papers.
Two Mexican men Velino Preza and Alejandro Marcucci were arrested for smuggling jewels linked to Empress Carlotta into New York. The items valued at about 76000 dollars included two diamond rings and a large diamond pendant once worn by Carlotta. A third man fled.
