Special Dispatch to Tur Times from Woopsury New Jersey May 24 reports the Gloucester County Court's fifth day with Judge Woodhull and associates. The prisoner Tighe testified he struck Burk with a shovel in self defense during a land dispute after a threat with a fork. Witnesses assess his prior peaceable character while cross-examination continues.
The jury found Mrs. Smith and Cave Bennett guilty of murder in the first degree after a trial before Judge Knapp. The verdict came after three hours of deliberation with initial votes nine to three, then eleven to one, and finally unanimous. Defense lawyers planned to pursue the usual legal steps to appeal or spare the defendants.
Coroner Gilbert J. held inquests into the deaths of William Wilde seven, drowned in the Schuylkill at West Magavens Thursday. John Thompson eight, drowned in a brick-pond at Twenty second and Moore Friday. and Frank Pinkham killed accidentally in the Pennsylvania Railroad yard at Hestonville while coupling cars. New York May 24 The return of Reuben FE Fenton from Europe where he attended the Monetary Congress prompted a demonstration by Custom House officials and Hayes Republicans. A revenue cutter escorted the party down the bay as Fenton was warmly welcomed and congratulated. It was quietly said he would lead the Hayes Republicans in New York State in support of Secretary Sherman.
Cape Town reports the Zu lulu land advance will start in a few days with Colonel Wood leading the offensive toward Kambula Hill. Reconnaissance indicates the Caffre Mountain stronghold at Zlobani near Wood’s camp has been abandoned. Times notes Sir Bartle Frere will not resign.
