In Toledo on May 5 Mayor H. M. Jones, also President of the Police Commissioners, refused to surrender the Police Department to the new Board created by Legislature and appointed by Governor Nash. He argues no authority is superior to the people and denies the Legislature's right to oust a voter elected board.
Fire broke out on the Central Vermont freight steamer Mohawk while unloading at New London. Four tugboats helped confine the blaze to the after freight compartment and deckhouse, starting in a heap of jute and blamed on careless smoking by stevedores. Some crew slept and escaped. Damage estimates were not yet determined as much of the cargo had been discharged.
