The White House announced that W. J. Calhoun of Danville Illinois will go to Cuba to act as the United States legal counsel in the Ruiz case replacing Judge Day who moved to Assistant Secretary of State. Calhoun is described as a lawyer of fine ability and a longtime close friend of the President.

In West Buxton Maine on April 30 John Lane his wife and their infant were found shot dead at their Bonny Eagle home. A letter from Lane says he decided to kill them but gives no reason. Witnesses describe him as temperate and peaceful. Lane was about 30, owned a small farm and was nephew to former Portland hotel proprietor John Lane. the family had seemed happy.
John H. Hiers, 65, of 567 Washington Street Camden, was fatally injured when his son’s driving horse shied at a bicycle under the Nellie Bly express near Mt Ephraim Avenue crossing of the Camden and Atlantic Railroad. The horse died instantly and Hiers, suffering concussion and internal injuries, was taken to Cooper Hospital where his recovery is unlikely.
Harvey Knee, in a fit of despondency following a quarrel with his wife, drank half an ounce of arsenious acid to kill rats. He refused antidotes. four men_overpowered him before emetics could be given, and doctors say he will die.
