Senator Quay plans to publicly announce his gubernatorial choice soon after surveying state sentiment. He weighs Ex Senator Cameron or Congressman Sibley if Elkin proves weak, while President Roosevelt and Penrose monitor the race for strong party leadership.
The Allegheny county Republican machine proposes to cede nominations for a Congressman Treasurer Commissioner and two other posts to the anti machine faction to secure harmony. Harriman and companions return from Mexico aboard a special train, passing Eagle Pass at 3 P M. President Roosevelt will present a sword to Major Micah Jenkins on April 9 in Charleston during President’s Day at the Exposition. Eight years earlier John Purtell and Frederick Dean sought Derby police posts. Purtell was rejected for underweight, while Dean was hired. Purtell then steadily gained weight to qualify, but a vacancy remained. Recently Mayor Stephen Charters reviewed Dean's record and dismissed him after one arrest in eight years.
From Shamokin on March 23, reports say a coal miners strike on April 1 is unlikely. The United Mine Workers plan a convention resolution demanding union recognition eight hour workday minimum wage and coal weighing where feasible. A. C. Worrell and George Wynn, strikers, were arrested at midnight in Norfolk charged with attempting to wreck a Norfolk Railway and Power Co car. They were released on $500 bonds each. Police say Wynn had a revolver. Guards patrol all cars and 50 deputy sheriffs are on duty. A repeat disturbance could trigger militia recall.
