Reading, June 9. An enumeration of Schuylkill Valley furnaces shows eleven of twenty one first class furnaces from Conshohocken to Pottsville have closed due to dull iron business. The Robesonnia Furnace, largest in the country at eight hundred tons weekly, along with Mount Laurel and Macingle furnaces and two at Birdsboro, are among those idle.
Edward Beers, a well known Belvidere farmer, died by self strangulation this afternoon while plowing in a field. He tied a rein to a low tree limb and sat down to choke himself. He had shown strange behavior and attempted suicide twice before. A family history of similar crisis mania is noted with a brother having taken his life years ago. He leaves a wife and five children.

New York June 9 Alice Woodhall, extradited from England for a $52,000 bond transfer, was released on government witness testimony but rearrested on a State forgery charge. In Buffalo on the stand Rev George H Ball faced cross examination in his libel suit against the New York Evening Post. Ball said his information about President Cleveland came from unnamed parties and he had not heard anything damaging from Cleveland’s friends. He refused to provide testimony to support charges in his pamphlet Tell the Truth from the last presidential campaign.
Robbers stole three barrels of tallow worth 60 dollars from John Baxters Son’s tallow-rendering shop in South Camden. A man linked to the theft led officers to Solomon Nathans soap factory at Fourth and Lombard, but fled after a chase where a drop caused a fall. The team and tallow were recovered. second similar robbery at the Baxters in two weeks.

The Military Academy at West Point concluded its commencement exercises today with many visitors present. In the official order of merit were Pennsylvanians Peyton March and James W. McAndrew and Koester Hartman, John D Hartman, Andrew G Quay. Morar land of Maryland ranked 82.
In Orphans' Court Judge Ferguson ordered Albert James former guardian of Mrs Anna May Frantz to pay $973.56 to her within ten days. Frantz claimed she came of age last February and the money was Court approved. James had issued a check. payment was refused when presented.
Charles Kobler of 1518 North Front Street was held for a further hearing by Magistrate Smith on selling liquor without a license. He testified he bought liquor from a nearby tavern and treated friends. Lucille Crilly testified Kohler sold beer on several occasions.
The Jefferson Medical College faculty votes to extend the course from two to three years. The change takes effect in 1800, granting matriculates two years’ notice. The Board of Trustees will consider the proposal at tomorrow’s meeting.
Special telegram reports John Rady on trial for the murder of his father. The jury retired between five and six o'clock this evening in Livingston, with a verdict still pending as the session continued.
A mob of about three thousand men and boys gathered outside Industrial Hall last night. Police halted the crowd as threats of eggs and missiles were hurled, and Dr. Landis canceled the performance citing inability to secure protection. Receipts for the five performances topped $2,500 with Landis earning about $400. The scene was described by officers as a repeat of Friday night’s disturbances.
Wilmington June 9 The return of the Shrievalty nomination comes in slowly with indications that Alvan Allen has been nominated by a small majority. County vote likely not exceed 8500. Democrats avoid defeat at the autumn election by this nomination.
Prohibitionists in Camden county withdrew their petition for a special election under the local option law. Since no election can occur this year a new petition will be circulated for signatures and presented to the court in September or October for an election in January.
Coroner investigated the death of 54 year old Peter Ryan owner of a ragshop at 1869 Bainbridge Street. He was found dead on a pile of rags in his cellar. Post mortem by Dr Formad ruled heart disease as the cause.
Amos Parham of South Camden, who tried to end his life last Sunday by slashing his throat with a butcher knife, is pronounced out of danger. He denies it was a jealousy attempt against his wife, saying it was prompted by business troubles.
Billy Williams, the burglar charged with the murder of Policeman Julian Arnold in Alexandria Virginia on May HM 1887, who escaped from prison about six months ago, was recaptured this morning near the city.

Dr Emili B Gardette, a longtime resident, lies ill at 910 Walnut Street for over a week with delirium. Eight year old Paul Brown of 847 Randolph Street was run over by a wagon near his home, injuring his right hand. A hafit hawser parted at Pier 29 yesterday and seriously injured Charles Caldwell of 1702 Woodstock Street. He was taken to the Pennsylvania Hospital. Josephine Laws of 1018 Rodman Street was jailed on $400 bail for assaulting Ellen Gibson. Robert Battersby of Waterloo Street held on $1000 bail for alleged assault on Benjamin Trent of 5182 Clearfield Street. Vincent of 5000 Winton was struck on the entry while at Polk..."
