Hazleton June 8 At a Freeland meeting Delaware Susquehanna and Schuylkill employes voted to refuse handling trains carrying bayard state or non union officers during the anthracite miners strike. They addressed Luther Smith superintendent and said the company will rely on Lehigh Valley to move such trains while the strike lasts.
The Hazleton division plans to replace striking anthracite workers by staffing trains with officers and deputies and nonunion recruits from big cities. An effort to start the Cranberry colliery washery may begin tomorrow. Some miners are being urged to relocate to British Columbia for better wages, with Canadian Pacific agents promoting distant coal fields but meeting limited success.
Prominent officials tied to the coal interests in Schuylkill predict the coal strike will end within two to three weeks. Workers claim victory and expect action after Harrisburg's Republican convention. Miners continue moving to soft coal regions as employment agencies push workers toward Altoona and Clearfield districts. R Smedley Hall 24 a brick contractor at 412 Taylor avenue Allegheny attacked his nurse Della Cochrane while temporarily insane. He tried to kill them both with a razor, wounded her hand and wrist before turning the blade on himself, dying before aid could reach him. The coroner notified, mother in West Chester.
An excursion train carrying over 500 people from Alpena to Saginaw wrecked at Black River near forty miles an hour. August Grosinski was killed. three others were fatally injured and about fifty sustained injuries from bruises to broken limbs. The German Aid Society of Alpena organized the trip. The tender left the track and the first three coaches derailed. Grosinski and his son sat together, the boy unharmed.
Philadelphia and New York hotel man John Logan owner of the Bingham House Cafe was chloroformed in his room by Henry Monroe and robbed of 150 dollars a 200 dollar gold watch and a 500 dollar diamond ring. Monroe fled dropping 50 dollars. police arrested him later and recovered the remaining money and the watch. A trunkful of silverware also recovered from Monroe's home.
Chicago June 8 The prisoner known as Dad Cain held at Fort Sheridan attempted to escape last evening. Private Lawrence Dunn of the Twentieth Infantry fired after six commands to halt and mortally wounded Cain as he ran. Cain died within an hour.
In Altoona and Schuylkill region districts, Central Pennsylvania coal operators and miners face tension as National Board representatives probe conditions. District President Gilday says bituminous miners oppose strikes while warning against supplying the anthracite market. Police later remove effigies tied to strike sympathy in Wilkes Barre area.

Hattie Loftus, who attempted suicide at 231 Greenwich Street, died at Philadelphia Hospital Saturday night after transfer from Methodist Hospital. Officials cited family report of disruptive behavior and mental decline. coroner notified.
A June afternoon storm in Columbus Georgia caused two deaths and injured a third. Carpenter J. J. Willis died near a large oak on upper First avenue while speaking with M. M. Coch rane who was also struck. Louis McClain died from a bolt in Phoenix City across the river, struck while holding a clothes wire.

The train will stop at Petersburg and reach Philadelphia Tuesday morning. Eleven Philadelphians were in the front car drinking when the engine exploded at Aquia Creek injuring no one.
