The Public Ledger began in 1836 by Swain Abell and Simmons at Third and Dock streets, sold for 1 cent. It moved to Third and Chestnut, prospered, and in 1864 Drexel and Childs bought it, doubling price and advertising rates. Childs shaped it as a family journal excluding graphic crime and slander, boosting its standing as a trusted advertising medium. By 1867 the Ledger’s new building opened and Childs died in 1894, passing control to George W. Childs Drexel.
