Special to The Philadelphia Times reports in Phillipsburg on January 22 a smallpox scare as Hackettstown residents visiting for a lawsuit were ordered out of town by Mayor Bowers after witnesses were denied lodging. The incidents included dining at the railroad station and hotels refusing them.

A Lake Erie snow storm began Tuesday morning then intensified into a blizzard. It halted traffic in Chardon and Berea, suspended business, and crippled street and steam railway movement. Buffalo reported seventeen inches of snow.
