Belmont faced charges of carpetbagger status and out-of-district fortune, while Lessler’s victory files a nearly full-term seat despite Democratic dissension and legal skirmishes.
William Jennings Bryan stayed overnight with James H. Birch in Burlington after a Philadelphia welcome. The Birch mansion glowed with illumination and a dinner honored the guest, who arrived with Daisy Birch's circle present. Bryan plans a Jackson Day address in New Haven.

Masked intruders battered Levi Silvis and his wife near Pleasant Unity early January 7. They seized Silvis, struck him with a revolver butt, and beat Mrs Silvis until she collapsed. the assailants took about $300 and fled as a family watched. The couple’s son, returning home, found his father in critical condition.
Joseph Caskey and his son were found shot to death in a Camden stable yard. Police suspect murder or self harm, with a heavy revolver nearby and a history of property disputes and family tension. The elder Caskey, 58, supported a large, sickly family. the son, 30, left a wife and several children.
The January reports show Great Britain imported goods valued at £522,238,986 in 1901, down from 1900 by £836,177. Exports totaled £280,498,889, a drop of £10,693,107 from the previous year.

In Salladaysburg hunters Dr Bastian and Zachary Clark shot a five pronged buck last Thursday. The Lycoming Sportsmen's Association and Game Warden Berrier filed information before Alderman Kellenbach. Both pleaded guilty and were fined 100 dollars each, total costs 232 dollars 60 cents.
Former President Cleveland shows health gains in Princeton as he leaves his room and comes downstairs but cannot venture outdoors until the weather clears. Mrs. Cleveland notes his continued weakness yet overall improvement this week.
In Cleveland on January 7 a tug cannot reach crib No. 3 miles offshore where workers dig a new water works tunnel. Heavy ice prevents passage and several laborers are reported to be suffering the bends, needing medical aid though food supplies remain adequate.
In St Louis on January 7 the initial construction at the 1,200 acre Louisiana Purchase Centennial Exposition site commenced with the building of a channel and sluiceway to confine the River Des Peres. The project is expected to cost about $120,000.
Vienna January 7. The trial began behind closed doors today of Captain Carina of the Austrian cavalry accused of divulging military secrets to France for 2000 pounds. He denied ever possessing or having access to the information alleged to be sold.
The Porto Rican Legislative Assembly adopted a joint resolution urging a United States naval station in Porto Rican waters. Copies were sent to President Roosevelt as the island fears a site at St Thomas and pledges to cede land if needed.
Captain Newcomb of the wrecked schooner Cactus arrived in Boston after the coal laden vessel ran ashore near the Coffin Patches off the Florida coast. A beacon inside the patches is blamed for guiding the ship to destruction. Newcomb reported seeing the light from about fifteen miles away, though the patch’s rumored five mile radius is cited.
Mexico City January 7 The arbitration issue has reached a crisis as Central and South American delegates opposed to Chilean representatives hold meetings to seek a workable form. If no acceptable plan emerges they may withdraw. Chileans threaten to quit if compulsory arbitration is reported.
Lexington stockholders of Blue Grass Consolidated Traction Company vote to issue bonds totaling 7 million dollars. The plan calls for building a railroad network radiating from Lexington to connect multiple points.

ST PAUL January 7 Cole and James Younger have asked the State Board of Pardons to commutate their life terms to thirty five years. They say friends are prepared to help them start a business in Missouri, their former home. They are now on parole and barred from leaving Minnesota.
The body of Joseph Dresch, a well known gardener, was found today in an abandoned cistern in Cincinnati. Dresch had been missing since Sunday and marks on the body indicate murder.
Huntington West Virginia January 7 It is announced that the city will erect an eighty thousand dollar building to give the free library institution a substantial boost and support from Carnegie funding.
