A long personal statement from Mr Blaine defends his wife against censure over James Blaine Jr and Miss Marie Nevins. He recalls the marriage in 1886, the response of Rev Ducey, and the couple's life in New York and Augusta, asserting Mrs Blaine did all to foster their happiness and never sought to separate them.
Special Telegram reports Father Ducey astonished by Blaine letter after his son's marriage. He says he performed the ceremony between Jones and MissEvins after a dispensation from Archbishop Corrigan, claiming he took no responsibility. Edward Cook of Seventh and Pine streets Camden was taken to City Jail in a demented condition after a fit of violence. He was moved to the County Jail and restrained, then returned home later that night in uncertain condition.
Special Telegram from Minton Ohio reports William Bender a respected Milton educator turned violent assailant during fits of insanity. He terrorized residents. after a chase he fled into his home and confessed to the attacks before doctors deemed him hopelessly insane. The case stunned a prominent family.
Special Telegram to Tue Tres reports twenty eight Grand Lake residents fell ill after eating bread made with soda from a shared box during snow blockades. Arsenic was found in the soda. authorities suspect John Francis of Olamon, an Indian hunter, used poison to settle a feud. Dr. W T Merrill confirmed arsenic in the sample. Two deaths occurred.
Captain Charles Cunningham, one of the river front’s oldest seamen, died Saturday at his son-in-law Thomas McDonough’s home 10 Fontaine street. Born in County Antrim Ireland he ran away at 13 to sail and later served as an ensign in the American Navy before a long merchant marine career. Burial is set for 1 pm tomorrow at the family residence.
In Virersta Braon Virginia on February 28 President Harrison enjoys a tranquil Sunday. Severe northeaster storm prevents chapel services and public worship. The president, his daughter Mrs Dimmick and family spend the morning indoors and later walk the beach. He plans a gunning trip with Ragged Island Club at six tomorrow, returning Wednesday if weather and plans permit.
Crowds thronged Berlin streets before the Imperial Palace while mounted police patrolled the disturbed quarters. Authorities report improved order with 23 of 100 arrested yesterday still detained. The Emperor and family drove in Thiergarten to cheers as loyal reception continued.
A Sunday blaze at Smith, Gray & Co. on Fulton and Flatbush avenues leveled a clothing store and damaged four houses, with total losses over $500,000. In Wilkes Barre Miss Lizzie Jones a 19 year old party attendee at Miners Mille failed to awaken after returning home to a locked door. She slept under the porch until entering the house and has remained in a cataleptic state despite attempts by several physicians to revive her. No cause is yet known.
Former Arkansas governor Elias N. Conway died in a fire at his residence early this morning. Authorities say the blaze, accidental in nature, engulfed Conway as he slept, with investigators examining the scene for a definite cause.
The House will hear majority and minority reports on the Springer wool bill. The majority led by Mr Springer argues McKinley era duties are too high and unfair to consumers, producers, and growers, noting wool prices have fallen and sheep numbers shrunk since 1867, while shoddy production overtakes domestic wool. The minority led by Mr Barrows presents differing conclusions on tariff impacts and protections.
The new tariff boosted U S sheep numbers by over 1.5 million and spurred woolen mills and idle machinery into operation. Mills were refurbished, many workers hired, and new industries started as imports of foreign woolen goods fell by 22.5 million dollars. Consumers benefit with lower costs and better quality woolens.
