Deserters report General Cronje willing to surrender at Paarldeberg but hindered by Transvaal Boers. British guns dominate approaches from the river as Shropshires gain ground. A kopje captured last week yields strategic position despite women and children with Boer forces.
The February 21 report describes General Cronje's defense at Paardeberg with dawn rifle fire marking the heaviest engagement of the war. Gloucesters and Essex regiments misfired into a Boer laager, suffering few British casualties as Knox and Smith-Dorrien pressed lines on both riverbanks. French moved east toward a kopje reinforced by a Ladysmith contingent while Broadwood deployed horse artillery left rear to the same kopje. Boers fled toward French after a sharp shelling. many killed or captured as the kopje, a natural stronghold, proved a pivotal position for defense against eastern reinforcement. No clue to the identity of the two men who robbed the Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary Magdalen di Pazzi in Marriott Street above Seventh. Father Isoleri estimates the loot at over 400 dollars. Locals recall two men seen in the church yard Tuesday night but dismissed as visitors.
Telegram from Shenandoah reports a late night burglary at Harry Levitt’s main street furrier where robbers shattered a large plate glass window and escaped with twenty five dollars’ worth of goods and cash.
Ailing engineer Hamilton or Henry Herbert Greyson dies in Pennsylvania Hospital after a life spanning four continents. In New Haven a wounded Springfield man Jesse H. Bailey under arrest was reconciled with his wife on a sickbed. Bailey, gravely ill with pneumonia, remained in police custody as his condition deteriorated. His son Roscoe visited, and the wife was summoned but had not yet reached him when the reconciliation occurred.
