Letters accusing ex superintendent George F. McFarland of gravest misconduct at Soldiers Orphans Schools will be presented Thursday to joint Senate House and Grand Army committees in Harrisburg by Representative William F. Stewart. The letters allege improper proposals to soldiers widows seeking service. Stewart says more evidence will be shown and the inquiry may revisit old scandals from the schools’ past management.
Prominent Twenty Sixth Ward politician and Common Council member David Thompson died at his home 1685 Hicks street after a five week bed illness. The 54 year old liquor businessman spent much of his life in saloon work before turning to politics in 1883 and serving multiple terms in the council. A widow survives.
A northbound express on the Northern Central Railway between Ralston and Roaring Branch derailed after striking a broken rail. The rear coach with about thirty passengers rolled down a high embankment, overturning several times. Paris February 24 1889 The Socialist demonstration collapsed amid cold wind and snow. The Seine rose flooding the Quai d Antell and nearby districts as twenty glaziers and plumbers froze in front of the Hotel de Ville with the event ending in a total fizzle.
The final large hull casting for the United States cruiser San Francisco was produced at the Pacific Rolling Mills. The steel casting, for the port strut of the port shaft, involved 26,000 pounds of metal in the furnace and required about twelve board heats at roughly 4,000 degrees to reach casting readiness.

Newark February 4. William H Hutchinson known as John Sand died at his Harrison home. Born 1831 in Washington Pennsylvania he once led a Natchez Mississippi school and later moved to Burlington. He contributed to the New York New York Philadelphia Press and The New York Times.

A blaze in Roaring Springs gutted the Bethel Church of God this morning caused by a defective flue. Altoona firefighters assisted and saved the town from further damage.

Several Firemen were injured by a fallen ladder. Chief Engineer Hunter frozen hands and feet. Authorities deem the blaze incendiary.

A train on the Reading Railroad struck and killed an unknown man at James street crossing Falls of Schuylkill. The body was brought to the Morgue for identification. Descriptions note a 30 year old 5 ft 8 in, 175 pounds, light hair and complexion, wearing a blue sack coat brown trousers and blue vest. A separate note reports Georgianna Mitchell injuring an ankle after slipping on ice at Ninth street and Snyder avenue and being taken to a hospital.
The Schuylkill Navy Athletic Club will host its fourth monthly entertainment next Thursday at 1918 Market Street rooms. Prizes for club events attract a large entry list. The club plans strong representation at the toateg tapeing and wrestling event at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York on Saturday evening March 23.

Captain Kemble of the steamer Iroquois from New York reports heavy weather on the voyage. On February 23 at 7 90 P. M off South Hatteras Shoals, a Coston distress light appeared to the east followed by a prolonged whistle, but rough seas and fog prevented sighting or communication. The Iroquois headed northward and then lost sight of the signal at 9 P. M as the vessel labored and sea conditions worsened.
Paris reports Socialists tried to hold a meeting at the Hotel de Ville but gendarmes dispersed small crowds and arrested several. Similar orderly meetings occurred in Bordeaux Lyons Roubaix and Marseilles while Nantes agitators shouted Vive la Revolution Sociale. Delegates issued a manifesto urging workers to avoid demonstrations to prevent bloodshed.
