Berlin dispatch reports the death of Albrecht Theodor Emil von Roon Count and Field Marshal former Minister of War and Marine of the German Empire. Born April 30 1803 in Pienshagan educated at the Berlin Barracks his rapid rise saw him command staff roles and key campaigns from the 1848 Boden affair through 1864 1866 and the Franco Prussian War where he earned high honors and a field marshal rank in 1872.

The dead body of an Indian was found on the ice near Sackett's Harbor this morning. Washington February 23 The Senate executive session devolved into a bitter exchange with Conkling attacking Burnside over Stratton’s appointment. Conkling branded Burnside meddlesome and weak, Burnside retorted with defiance, both trading epithets amid near blows before order was restored and the body adjourned. The piece notes Hamlin’s expected peacemaker role.
John Swetzer a East One Hundred and Eleventh Street butcher was murdered on Third Avenue near One Hundred and Seventh Street. A nearby Italian suspect fled as a struggle was heard and a long scissors blade was driven into Swetzer's heart. The alleged attacker was identified as Louis Palmero and the peanut stand keeper was arrested.
The Irish Revolutionary Brotherhood in New York greeted Fenian leader James Stephens with an address of welcome. The actives criticized Irish American leadership as chaotic and lacking confidence, urging Stephens to organize and unite the movement. Stephens responded that a better day is dawning and that he aims to organize rather than control any party.
In Washington on February 23 the Senate report notes the Butter amendment on telegraphing by railroad companies was passed in the army appropriation bill from the House without notice. Easton report details a fatal accident as fifteen year old William Haggerty was struck by a passing train on the Central Railroad track yesterday afternoon while at the coal yard. Captain James Hervey of Bellville New York gave an engaging program at the Philopatrian Literary Institute last evening. The event proceeds will benefit the Sunday Morning Breakfast Association and the concert will be held tomorrow evening at the hall at Eleventh and Wood streets.
