Washington reports the sundry civil bill to be debated in the House requests about 17 million dollars for Post Office and sub-Treasury facilities in several cities, Coast Guard and life-saving stations, lighthouse services, engraving and printing costs, and general repairs. The bill’s total is near 17 million with prior year estimates near 22 million and this year’s similar bill at around 7.5 million.
A Pittsburg judge and officials were sentenced after a new trial denial in the Seventh ward ballot alteration conspiracy. Judge Bailey sentenced Republican inspector W. L. Scott and judge Joseph Rousch to one year in jail and $100 fines. Republican inspector W. L. Scott cried as sentence was read. Joseph Crown fled and had bail forfeited. A special allocator will be sought before the Board of Pardons for release considerations. These men counted out Alderman Butler in February 1578.
In Newburyport Massachusetts on February 22 a Ward brass statue of Washington costing 20000 was unveiled at City Hall before a large audience. Mayor Currier presided as prayers and music accompanied the ceremony. The Sons of Newburyport presented resolutions from New York and Rev Stephen H Tyng gave an address. George Lunt wrote a Washington poem read by Rev George D Wildes, followed by an oration by Bishop Clark of Rhode Island.
R J Dobbins of Philadelphia, owner of multiple Long Branch properties, bought the Pavillion Hotel at the judgment sale yesterday. Sheriff Brown sold the property and knocked it down to Dobbins for twenty five dollars over all legal claims. Dobbins held a large mortgage against the Pavillion property.
Weston reached Sax Mundham at 2 35 this afternoon, 173 miles behind schedule as the journey continued.
Special Dispatch describes Charles W Angell secretary of the Pullman Palace Car Company, arrested in Lisbon as Charles Seymour Angell, with bonds and cash seized. Whitney Frank, a U S Treasury agent, explains Starling’s orders to return Angell to Chicago for trial. Cap tain Newell and crew reach Lewes after a 40 day voyage.
Governor Cullom of Illinois requested Charles W. Angell be delivered to Whitney Frank in Philadelphia. On February 10 Governor Hoyt ordered a warrant for Angell’s delivery to the Chicago officer. Court records from Cook County accompany the requisition detailing the embezzlement case and assets.
A London based article claims a hidden British movement sought a closer Anglo American alliance with Japan through a new treaty. It alleges English influence manipulated the text in Washington, inserting a clause delaying effect until other powers conclude similar pacts, rendering the agreement a bundle of waste paper.
Henry Bigelow Williams of 45 Milk Street files for bankruptcy in Boston. Liabilities total 1,286,931.51 dollars. Debate over delegate selection ended with Foley's motion approved by voice vote. a clash over ten conventions failed 36 to 131. Samuel McKeley from Sewickley fired a personal attack on the Barr family but was hissed down.
A fire late last night in a third story back room of 10 Walnut Street gutted the top floor of a building housing Miss Williams student boarding house and M Voorhies millinery store. The blaze, started by a lamp in a student room, burned about an hour with all other floors soaked. Total loss around 1000 dollars, partially insured.
