A $300 000 blaze at the Shaduck Manufacturing Company in Brooklyn left fourteen injured. In the same city two children perished in a separate night fire. Earlier a St Louis apartment fire killed one woman and a man, with many escaping by jumping from windows as stair exits failed.
An early morning blaze destroyed the Empire Hotel at 2700 2702 Olive Street killing 11 occupants including 10 men and 1 woman and injuring eight others. Firefighters and police later recovered victims from the ruin as frostbite and burns plagued survivors on a frigid winter night.
A blaze at the Shadbolt Manufacturing Company in Brooklyn causes an estimated 300000 in damage. Fourteen people are injured and taken to hospitals while other firms nearby suffer losses totaling about 50000. J P Morgan met with Cassatt and Baer in Philadelphia to discuss future relations between the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Reading Company. A key topic was Reading access to the Pennsylvania underground entry from Jersey City to New York. Officials doubt Reading would win such access without concessions, and mention a potential link through the Baltimore and Ohio to indirectly control Reading.
Washington February 9 Senator Quay departed for his St Lucie Florida plantation due to throat illness and seeks rest until spring. He will be met by his son Richard Quay in Florida. A conference with Senator Penrose and Insurance Commissioner Durham preceded the trip with Governor race plans discussed.
General Bingham of Philadelphia, confined a week with a severe cold that nearly became pneumonia, left his hotel for the first time this evening to visit a friend. Doctors had feared danger but reported improvement last Friday and he may travel to Atlantic City when strong enough.
Cleveland February 9 A east bound Superior street motor dashed into a freight train at the Cleveland and Pittsburgh grade crossing on Superior street. Five men were hurt three of whom were named Patrolmen John Connell Fred EB Brown Henry Kiel Motorman Charles A Sioda and an unknown passenger None of the injured are believed to be dangerously hurt.
An Erie and Western freight locomotive exploded on a siding near Mt. Marys today. Fireman Floyd Brown of Lima was killed. Details are scarce as investigators assess the wreck and cause.
President Roosevelt arrived at Groton School to find Theodore Jr and two companions with pneumonia. He remained several hours and planned to stay until his sons condition improved. The school issued an enforced vacation for 150 boys while doctors managed the illnesses.
The Stationary Firemen's Union of the anthracite region plans a convention at Nanticoke on March 1 to act on the eight hour issue.
