Forces near Iloilo and Manila prepare for a landing and occupation. General Otis may order bombardment if Iloilo resists. casualties total 268 with 8 officers and 56 enlisted men killed and 8 officers and 221 men wounded.
Advices from Iloilo describe four days of native arrivals amid a growing readiness for a landing by General Miller's troops. Two thousand soldiers occupy key buildings as officers ride on ponies and stores close. Outside, about ten thousand armed natives await entry while Negrros harbor reports of twenty thousand more preparing for action.
Washington reports fighting at San Roque near Cavite. Dewey says armed insurgents left by nine. village burned, American troops now hold the area. Filipinos gather reinforcements from northern provinces as Caloocan and Malabon fronts heat up.
Surgeon General Sternberg stated no extra provision is needed for sick and wounded in the Philippines as hospitals increased to meet emergencies. The hospital ship Relief sails February 15 from New York via Suez to Manila carrying medical supplies, 12–15 officers, and 150 I Corps privates to relieve troops ongoing there.
A Madrid cablegram reports Residor, head of the Philippine committee in London, claiming Agoncillo issued orders from Washington to attack in February. It says Aguinaldo ordered Agoncillo to flee to Canada and notes heightened activity among the Philippine colony in London.
In Montreal in February, Agoncillo Marti and Lena say the Filipinos are quiet. They have sent and received cables, but the awaited messages from Aguinaldo have not arrived yet. Agoncillo says he remains unable to proceed without direct news.
He states that seven points are linked by cable and wire and more will be added as the war progresses. He says they do not rely on Japanese aid for now and have made no overtures to them. When asked about other Filipino friends from Washington, he says they will stay there until ordered to leave.
Washington reports from General Otis list additional casualties. Names include Thirteenth Minnesota, First Montana, First Nebraska, and First Colorado units with wounded and killed personnel such as Alexander F. Burns, Gustav E. Edmund, William Philpot, H. G. Livingston, and others across multiple companies and batteries.
The United States transport Grant, which sailed from New York on January 19 bound for Manila, passed here today as it nears its destination.
Michael Hart alias Piggy Hart faces a murder charge for the Victor Corretti killing at Dubois on April 25, 1896. Trial before Judge Cyrus Gordon began with jury selection as Hart pleads not guilty. Hart fled after the crime. Carey and Delaney were tried before with mixed outcomes.
Mrs. Thomas J. Stead of Plainfield New Jersey died last night from influenza. She was three months short of her 101st birthday and had celebrated her hundredth birthday in May. Her father served in Washingtons army and she had lived in the Plainfield area for 75 years with several descendants noted as prominent citizens.
Special Telegram reports that Charles Flora Robert Morrison John Shemeley Lewis Sharp and Charles Dougherty were sentenced to two to ten years in the State Prison by Sheriff Fleetwood. En route two fights broke out between Shemeley and Dougherty amid a grudge from a confession linkage.
Harry Cochran, 75, jailed for the $100,000 gold mint robbery, is described as mentally deranged with religious hallucinations. He has served about five years of a seven year six month sentence in the Eastern Penitentiary. A good behavior commutation reduces remaining time to one year. Relatives in the city exist but no pardon steps have been taken.
Seven men perish when the steamer Pr D collides with a railroad bridge at Johnsonville Tennessee and, while adrift four miles down the river, catches fire and burns. The wreck occurred early this morning with several crew reported missing.
Norristown February 9 Andrew Debro died from a stab wound inflicted by John Hadrig at a Port Kennedy wedding. After the ceremony guests drank heavily and fought. Debro was struck near the temple with a large bent knife. Hadrig was arrested as coroner’s inquest is set for tomorrow.
In a February early-morning fire on Faulk road near Wilmington seven members of the Barteh family escaped a burning two story dwelling. Theodore Barteh alerted others and helped kin to safety though Mrs Barteh was badly injured falling from a porch. The home sustained heavy loss estimated at 1 000 to 2 000 with insurance.
Advices from the Orient report Chinese insurgents defeating Japanese troops at Taipehiu with heavy casualties on both sides. Rebels used flank moves to close in and fought three hours, leaving 350 to 400 Japanese dead while rebel losses were under 100. Rebels then captured Tsu Lan near Lopeb, causing terror as civilians sought safety in Amoya fox.
George B. Nirdlinger a former U S Army lieutenant who served in Santiago is jailed in Trenton on forgery charges and is sought in Camden for similar offenses. He allegedly passed a 7.60 check to shoe dealer William J Lanigan and earlier fled with a 10 check while using the alias Thomas Choate.
A Chinese firm, The Lee Chan Fin Company, writes Collector Thomas seeking a copy of the Ding ley tariff act in Chinese to import lacquered woods from China. Thomas replies with a Hab paper copy and suggests using a Chinese interpreter in Washington for translation.
The Board of Surveyors finished their report on the Rhynland steamer finding damage worse than expected. The vessel will likely stay in dry dock about six weeks with repair costs estimated at $75,000. Extensive defects noted along the stern rudder and joint laps increased as work progressed.
George R B Dempsey a 37 year old Pennsylvania Railroad engineer killed himself at his Delaware City residence. The Elkton incident report notes his action followed a promotion and references prior service with the railroad, providing few further details while confirming self inflicted gunshot death.

The National Association of Builders held its convention in Milwaukee. John B. Stevens of Philadelphia was elected president with George G. Tapper of Chicago as first vice president and Charles A. Cowen of New York as second vice president. W. H. Seward of Boston was chosen secretary-treasurer. The next meeting site is to be decided by the Executive Board. Stevens spoke on the association’s work at the session.
Washington reports back that German officials in Samoa, Rose and Raffel, are criticized for conduct seen as violating the Berlin Treaty. The White House says no public discussion while diplomatic exchanges continue, awaiting proper German action and restraint.
