A court directed Mr. Havemeyer to serve on a jury along with his brokerage duties at 117 Wall Street and dwelling in Hempstead for part of the year. He agreed to serve after protest from a lawyer, and his fine was remitted.

John Gradep a 19 year old National Guard member says he shot his father James Graden a Civil War veteran in self defense after Graden abused Gradep’s mother and charged him. The son claims the pistol discharged into the left breast near the heart but Graden was not seriously hurt and was sent to a hospital. Gradep is in jail awaiting court.
William Lain of Laird Bros. Birkenhead died today. The firm founded by John Laird is famed for building the Confederate warship Alabama. The obituary notes Laird Bros. was among Britain’s leading shipyards and faced Northern opposition over the Alabama project.
Genaro Chicanila Giacomo Sasprodote and three others of 720 Fulton Street 807 South N Street were arraigned for the shooting death of 25 year old James Donnelly at Gray's Ferry road and Ellsworth street. Toland identified Chicanila as the shooter. The five defendants were committed to jail to await coroner action after police arrested them at City Hall during a snow storm incident.
Right Rev. John Williams D D LL D Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut and senior House of Bishops member died suddenly at the episcopal residence near 6 tonight after a week long grip attack. He had been an invalid for two years yet retained interest in Berkeley Divinity School and lectured to students in his room. He was born in Deerfield Massachusetts on August 30 1817.
Judge Beittler postponed the Quay indictments trial involving Senator Quay Benjamin Haywood and R R Quay until Monday February 27 to avoid election day February 21 and Washingtons Birthday February 22. The move follows warnings against starting on February 20 and signals Beittler as the likely presiding judge, amid speculation among lawyers and politicians.
The American schooner L. B. Bargent from New Foundland to Portland ran aground near Bt. ep in distress after a snowstorm. Judge Victor A. Moore died suddenly from a cerebral condition.
President McKinley commutes a court martial sentence for Brigadier General Charles P. Eagan from dismissal to six years suspension from duty. Eagan loses all allowances but retains pay. reinstatement comes just before retirement in January 1905. The action cites his gallant conduct in battle and long service as mitigating factors.
Havana February 7. General Maximo Gomez, commander in chief of the Cuban army, is reported in Havana having come quietly to avoid the ovations arranged along his route. A dispatch says Gomez remains at Remedios. Colonel Hecker, who was inspecting Cuban camps, left today for Washington.
City Notes describe the Sketch Club exhibition in club rooms on Wednesday March 4 and ending the following Saturday evening. The Art Club annual water colors exhibition opens March 27 with a gold medal event. A South Street theater incident and a fatal fire at Thirteenth and Express streets are reported with a man taken to hospital where he died.
A four story Wunderle candy factory at 118 to 134 Pegg street burned last night during a blizzard. The interior machinery and stock were ruined, with losses under 100000 dollars. Fire teams fought the blaze from half past 10 until after midnight. 350 workers affected.
Gloucester February 7 A posse of about ten men and six bloodhounds is forming to pursue armed assailants who tried to shoot Theodore Glover and his sister Abbie. The hunt, led by William Hendrickson and Edward Dobbs, aims to scour Mount Ephraim Hedding and Westville for the attackers. Hats left near the Glover home supply a clue as they fled after the confrontation.
Dr. Alvin C. Henderson Brooklyn coroner physician died at Long Island College Hospital from blood poisoning after amputation of his right leg. The infection followed a coin stepped on by a woman on his foot. He had earlier been injured on a trolley ride and limb swelling led to surgery. He was 53.
New York reports Dr. Henry F. E. Keyes and his wife found dead in their bedroom at Ardsley Casino Ardsley on the Hudson apparently from gas from a stove. Death ruled accidental. Dr Keyes son of the late General E. F. Keyes brother of Dr Edward L. Keyes of New York. Grandfather Erasmus D. Keyes commanded the Fourth Army Corps in the Civil War. Mrs Keyes daughter of Captain Ward, retired regular army officer.
The President today transmitted to the Senate from the Navy Department the battle records of Santiago showing the roles of Admirals Sampson and Schley and other naval officers. The extensive document was not read due to its voluminous size.
Madrid February 7 The Premier Senor Sagasta in an interview says he will submit a decree convoking the Cortes to the Queen Regent and expects a majority of thirty to approve the peace treaty with the United States.
Joseph Schristine aged 21 died at Warren Foundry after stumbling and falling into a pit at work. His neck broke and death was instantaneous. A brother of Schristine reportedly died similarly two years ago in a related incident at a nearby site.
Washington February 7 The naval committee after a long session agreed to twelve new warships and discussed three additional vessels under consideration.
Advices from Bolivia confirm President Alonzo and his army retreated to Oruro, a Bolivian town northwest of the capital. Reports say Indians are rising across the region and have begun to loot and plunder as the retreat proceeds.
Captain Miller announces the arrest of a tall negro suspect at Seventh and Catharine streets for the murder of Mrs. Mary Lawler at 713 Tasker. A key witness known as Mrs White testified after an affidavit led to the arrest as officers guard her at a Lombard Street lodging. The coroner delays inquest until formal accusation is set.
A further probe into William M. Conyngham's accounts shows a deficit over 2500. An attachment on Conyngham's property was issued by the United States Circuit Court but is expected to cover only a small portion. Assistant US District Attorney Kane says Conyngham tampered with postal orders for over a year to divert funds.
The British steamer Bothnia, acting as a Spanish transport, arrived at St Michael's in the Azure Islands from Choateegee. Fifty two Spaniards are dangerously ill, eight have died, and authorities impose a strict quarantine as the ship docks.
