Fire at the Hotel Royal in New York City trapped and killed several guests and workers. Rescue crews saved many, with unknown victims still unaccounted for as officials estimate up to 100 disappearances amid the ruins.
James T. Powers describes the blazing Hotel Royal on Fortieth Street near Sixth Avenue. Eyewitness accounts tell of crowds at windows, panicked jumps, and heroic rescues as firemen fought a rapid spread and a roof collapse.
Special Telegram reports Richard Meares proprietor of a New York lodging house and his wife escaped a blaze on the second floor after retiring at 1 am. Mrs Meares 45 ill and the building held many guests with most rooms occupied. The proprietor woke to smoke and saved two rooms before flames overwhelmed the hall.
John T. Sullivan, manager and supporter of Miss Rose Coghlan, witnessed the Hotel Royal fire from Jersey City. He arrived in New York at 4 30 and returned to describe walls collapsing and police estimating seventy five deaths as crowds blocked streets and transit.
A Polish Catholic church riot erupted after Father Januskiewicz read a critical letter to the congregation. Baranowski, a previously convicted chicken thief, was ejected and beaten by members. Dozens were hurt, warrants issued for many attackers, and Archbishop Ryan ordered inquiries.
A Reading freight and a Lehigh Valley coal train collided at a grade crossing two miles west of Bound Brook New Jersey early today. Fireman Patrick Bradley was rescued alive but died later at Muhlenberg Hospital Plainfield. Traffic on both railroads halted for hours.

Former city official Joseph F Marcer aged 60 died at his home 2114 Norris Street last night from catarrhal bronchitis and general debility. He had celebrated his 60th birthday yesterday while in frail health. He was serving as a registration clerk in the Bureau of Health. Funeral arrangements had not been made.
Annie Callahan aged 39 of 1319 Christian Street Philadelphia was taken to Philadelphia Hospital yesterday afternoon and pronounced insane by resident physicians. Recently she attempted suicide several times and friends, fearing for her safety, had her removed for care.
Carlisle judge denies license to D K Ernst proprietor of the sole Newville hotel. George Walker killed James Collins in Logan county West Virginia by striking him with an iron bolt. Caleb Davis of Cabin Ridge Calhoun County Virginia was fatally stabbed in a family quarrel involving John Starrett and his sister in law. Able Vansooy was struck to the peak in an incident described in a fragmented report.
The secretary of state James G Blaine declares he is not a candidate for the presidency and will not seek the nomination. The news prompts mixed reactions with Harrison supporters hailing it as a rest for renomination while some suspect a political trick amid Cabinet tensions.

Chicago dispatch reports George Painter is to hang for the murder of his wife Alice Martin also known as Alice Painter. The killing occurred May 11 last with the victim beaten to death by a club. Painter claimed a stranger committed the act and noted his own fevered illness and a bloodstained overcoat as evidence.
The steamship Folmnasing captained by Macdougall from Liverpool via Halifax bound for Baltimore was delayed by dirty weather after passing Cape Henry Friday night and is now proceeding slowly to its destination.
Lancaster reports no new developments as the Evangelical Church conflict at Akron shows ongoing tensions. Dubs faction held services with an officer present, Bow manite preacher officiated in the evening, and the dispute is headed for court resolution.
William Gauley of 2240 Pearl Street and James Conrad of 226 North Sixth Street were arrested by a Ninth district officer shortly before 8 PM on charges of assault and battery and highway robbery of Albert Digs of 223 North Twenty-fourth Street.
An eastbound freight on the Pennsylvania Railroad collided with a shifting switch at Watts Station early today. The engine and five cars wrecked and engineer Taylor Welsh of Lancaster was badly injured.
Minors attacked the garrison at Coal Creek last night. Fighting at long range lasted about twenty minutes with no casualties. latest reports say all is quiet.
Monday will bring severe gales along the Atlantic coast then a cold wave. Snow and cloudiness persist over lake regions with clearing following the storm reaching the Middle Atlantic States. The Ohio Valley and lower lake regions face the coldest stretch with shifting northwest winds in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey toward Monday evening and Tuesday.
Ten year old Fritz Bauer sustained a pistol shot wound to the ankle after an accident at his home on 1647 Bey Street. He was taken to German Hospital and later to Cooper Hospital for treatment as an investigation continues.
Adjutant General William McClelland died at 4 45 PM in Harrisburg Hospital after a surgical operation. He spoke with Governor Pattison and Secretary Tate before losing consciousness, dictated a statement, and later asked about treatment prospects. The illness began November 14, worsened after Old Point Comfort, and prompted emergency surgery that could not save him. Governor Pattison and officials began funeral planning with McClelland's family to finalize arrangements after his wife arrives.
William McClelland born March 2 1842 in Mount Jackson fought in twenty two battles of the Army of the Potomac. He rose from private to captain and served as a lawyer, congressman nominee, and Democratic leader in Pennsylvania. He moved to Pittsburgh and held Chamber of Commerce roles and veteran group memberships. He was World’s Fair commissioner appointed by President Harrison.
