In Bloomsburg Pennsylvania on February 7 the Mollie Maguire defendants Patrick Hester Patrick McBugh Michael Graham and John Tully faced arraignment in Columbia County Court House for the murder of Alexander Rea superintendent of the Coal Ridge Improvement Coal Company. Evidence shows Rea was shot with six bullets on October 17 1868 near Centralia to Mount Carmel. Attorney Frank W. Hughes and others prosecuted while John W. Ryon led Hesters defense with a special plea arguing prior arrest and release without trial would harm him. The court adjourned after the arraignment and the case proceeds.

More Life Insurance Perjuries Special Dispatche Tax Titres St Louis February 7 John L Douglass president and E W Bryan actuary of the Columbia Life Insurance Company were indicted by the grand jury today for perjury in making false statements about the company. The indictment contains twenty one counts. They were arrested and gave bonds. Douglass had last week filed a criminal libel suit against G C Howe editor of the St Louis Journal who was imprisoned briefly for perjury charges. The affair stirs business circles and further indictments are expected.
The Farmers and Mechanics National Bank of Hartford, with capital 1,105,000 and surplus over 400,000, is found to be a heavy loss due to over drafts and loans made without directors knowledge. The total loss is unknown but capital likely not impaired. No officers implicated in the misused funds.
