Sypwry reports massive deaths from Queensland floods. Ipswich near Brisbane notes at least 22 drowned, with higher toll feared as wreckage and stench fill the swollen river. Brisbane’s lower districts submerged, river bridge swept away, and rail and telegraph lines cut off. Maryborough reports about 30 drowned and widespread inundation. Tiaro also under water.
The Supreme Court upholds the Orphans Court ruling and dismisses appeals by the Mercantile Library and Free Library of Philadelphia City Institute on the $150,000 Pepper bequest for a free Philadelphia library. Pepper’s plan favored a new library akin to the Boston Public Library, not the existing institutions.
The funeral of Joseph P. Comegys was held in Dover with Rev. Lightner of New Castle and Revs. Latell of Wilmington and Harris of Chestnut Hill presiding. Honorary pallbearers included Chief Justice A. P. Robinson and Chancellor James L. Wolcott among others. Governor Reynolds and state officials attended. Interment followed at Presbyterian Cemetery.
A loaded coal car descended a slope operated by C. F. King and Co. at Ebervale near Hazleton and struck four men. Stephen Marrisko and John Midley died at once while Charles Johnson and Anthony Terraska were gravely injured and not expected to survive.
In Cirencester the contested election is void as both candidates received an equal number of votes. Colonel Chester Master had been declared winner by 4,277 to 4,274 for Harry L. W. Lawson Liberal. A new election will be required.
Valentine D. Depner of Ashland died suddenly of heart failure yesterday. John Brown and John O Bry an of Philadelphia and Warren Emminger of Harrisburg escaped from the Huntingdon Reformatory. A hotel keeper froze to death near home last night. Reading City Council instructed a solicitor to proceed bondman for ex city treasurer Obald for his shortage of 190000. Angello Harry, a member of a musical trio seen in the state, died at her Carlisle home. A county met at Speed to pool their resources in a regional effort.
Supreme Court upholds dismissal in case of Colonel Hughes-Hallett who sought a share of his wife Emilie Page Schaumburg Hughes-Hallett’s income. The court finds trusts from Emily Page and George and James Page exempt the corpus from marital claims.
Lancaster February 6 At a county prison inspectors meeting serious allegations emerged. Levi Sensenig a political boss was said to seek purchase of the carpet chain with a pledge of favors in exchange for M F Kreider the board treasurer's election. The carpet room foreman testified overpayment by the board at 15 cents per pound above market price and noted his removal after flagging the alleged theft. Inspector Albert Smith faced charges of selling votes for patronage. affidavits claimed payments to Smith and Underkee for votes lost in the current election.
In Danville Hustings Court Judge Aiken presided as lawyer J T Clark faced trial for the November 12 1802 shooting of Rev J B Moffett Baptist preacher and editor of Anti Ziguor. Moffett died from a wound to the abdomen after the street altercation.
The Democratic city executive committee organized preliminaries for a five week upcoming election. They listed poll watcher candidates, filled officer vacancies, and arranged sample ballots while pledging to uphold election law and prosecute infractions. Meetings were set for Twenty first ward Temperance Hall Manayunk and Twenty second ward Keenan's Hall Germantown.
Police break into 2143 North Eleventh street to discover Mrs. Clara D. Hughes 40, her daughter Annie 17, and boarder William H. Taylor unconscious from leaking gas. The girl revived at Episcopal Hospital, while the mother and Taylor remained in a stupor. Gas pipes had burst, neighbors alerted, and a street shutoff by Officer Mors possibly saved others.
Washington February 6. Preliminaries to the annexation conference included White House talks among President, Secretary Foster, Secretary Tracy, and Attorney General Miller. Details of progress were not disclosed but the duration and frequency suggest a definite briefing for tomorrow's session. The State Secretary noted no reception arrangements for Hawaiians by the President.
The president sent to the Senate copies of the 1854 annexation treaty with Hawaii and related correspondence. Included are Secretary Marcy’s instructions to Minister Gregg, Gregg’s reply, notes on King Kamehameha II, succession, annexation sentiment decline, and Marcy’s disapproval of the treaty terms.

Paris February 6 The Chamber of Indictments reported no case against Deputy Rouvier and Senators Daves Grevy and Renault after M Franqueuille the examining magistrate in the Panama scandal had reported true bills A parliamentary inquiry commission voted 18 to 6 to reject a government proposal for a special commission to interrogate Cornelius Herz
In Paris the Chamber of Deputies considers whether Cornelius Herz should be examined in England to verify a 140,000 franc payment to Clemenceau. Justice Minister Bourgeois says only an examining magistrate can decide whom to interview. Clemenceau insists La Justice accounts are available to the inquiry committee.
Associate Judge David B. Green of Schuylkill County Courts died after a paralysis attack at 4 o'clock this morning in Porreville. He was born in 1887 and served on the bench for many years. Funeral arrangements were not yet announced.
The overdue steamship City of Peking was sighted at the harbor entrance early today and towed upriver by the tug Vigilant. After a 27 day Pacific crossing and 12 days overdue the vessel sailed 1100 miles from San Francisco before a shaft broke. she then proceeded under sail for 15 days covering over 1300 miles with heavy headwinds. The Pacific Mail steamship San Juan pursued the Peking last evening. No further incidents reported.
Chicago reports a wave of organizing among 200 non union switchmen who met to weigh joining a union and plan wage demands. They expect a strike soon after the World's Fair opens, seeking a five cent per hour raise, contingent on forming a capable organization.
Northampton Democrats adopt a resolution denouncing Assemblyman W. H. Woodring for voting with Republicans in the Andrews Higby contest at Harrisburg and call for his resignation. Senator Laubach is re elected chairman of the county committee.
In Cumberland Maryland report freight train No 74 on the Pittsburg division of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad collided with an extra freight at Williams Pennsylvania around 2 AM. Several freight cars wrecked. Engineer Wallace and Conductor Nez are missing. Conductor Dunlap and Conan Grimes were slightly hurt and Fireman Noland seriously injured.
At a large Frank Faul Young Men Democratic Club meeting held at 720 East Girard Avenue speeches urged support for fusion ticket contenders. Endorsed were Howard H. Higham for Select Council and George W. Price W. J. Slemmer Thomas Mintzer John H. Gendhart for Common Council. Thomas Delahunty for Receiver of Taxes and Charles F. E. Ingersoll for City Solicitor.
LAKEWOOD New Jersey February 6 Professor J H Worcester Jr D D professor of systematic theology at Union Theological Seminary New York died here this morning after a brief illness the direct cause of death being heart trouble He was in his 6th year and for the past eighteen months connected with the New York seminary Two weeks ago his physicians forbade him to do any active work and he was compelled to discontinue his lectures.
Harrisburg February 6. The Quarantine Commission forwarded two reports on the site for a new quarantine station. The majority favors Bombay Hook Island in Duck Creek township Kent county Delaware while the minority led by John Rebang favors Little Tinicum Island Reedy Island or the Pea Patch near Fort Delaware.
Shamokin mayor J H Zimmerman a prominent Democrat and five term ex burgess died this morning from rheumatism of the heart. Local officials and citizens mourn the longtime leader.
