Thousands of visitors watched a liner nearly a block long stuck on Brigantine shoals as passengers were ferried ashore by surfboats. Cargo was lightened to a lighter and tugs attempted to free the vessel, with a Norfolk lighter and tug expected tonight to aid.
The Venezuela rests on sands with fifteen feet of water at high tide and eighteen foot draft. Machinery is intact and no hull damage. Once cargo is removed, it is expected the ship can be refloated.
Passengers rescued from the steamer Venezuela, ashore on Brigantine shoals, arrived in Atlantic City and Camden before continuing to New York. An onscene passenger recounted foggy, snowy conditions, a loud tearing noise, and the vessel’s brief hard charge before it was freed and refloated. Captain Chambers reassured travelers that no serious damage occurred.
The Allan Line steamer Polynesian ran aground in thirteen feet of water near Cape Henry while entering the capes on a Baltimore voyage. Captain McDougall commanded the 2800 ton steel vessel with no passengers aboard. Merritt Wrecking Company sent tug Rescue and two barges with thirty men to assist. weather is favorable and salvage work may float her by high tide tomorrow.
The British steamship Parkgahe, from Cardiff, ran aground this morning in Buttermilk Channel near New York. She is thought to be on the rocks but not in great danger and will likely float at high water.
Mrs Catharine Sharp of Stiles and Fleetwood streets celebrated her 11th birth anniversary surrounded by a five generation family. Born February 26, 1778, she recalls Washington, Jefferson, the Burr Hamilton duel, and Perry. Her daughter Mary Smith is 73, granddaughter Annie Wilson 41, and great granddaughter Mary Wetherill 21, all thriving as memories of the early republic flavor the scene. Her memory and eyesight are notably keen though she is slightly deaf and cannot read print.
Harrisburg dispatch reports Adjutant General McClelland near death after a late night surgical operation by Dr. W W Keen and Dr. Duvott with Harrisburg hospital staff. Surgeons found malignant stomach ulceration and cancerous liver nodules. The patient consented to the procedure hoping for diagnosis, but doctors say his condition worsened and death may come within days.
Thomas Turner aged 29 of 160 Hewson street was knocked down crossing Kensington avenue Cumberland street by a wagon driven by H. A. Flonts of 200 South Second street. He sustained a rated wound and was taken to the Episcopal Hospital.
Berry Turner, a famed Kentucky desperado, is at large after killing Lee Davis and Will Jones amid the Turner Parton feud. A Claiborne County sheriff’s posse pursues him as the Parton family and local authorities fear a violent showdown along the Tennessee line. Magistrate Marsee fled Middlesboro after Turner threats.
Supreme Justice Alfred Reed heard testimony in Camden on the sanity of Mrs Emma Warrick of Atlantic City. Her family sought asylum confinement after she attempted to kill her daughter Miss Laura Belle Warrick. A physician said she planned to kill her children to spare them imagined calamities. The accused woman remains under police surveillance at home.
Special Telegram to Tux Traxs reports three residents disappeared this week in Reading. Lydia Shantz, 16, left after a quarrel over a Heavenly Recruit association meeting and may have died by suicide in the Schuylkill river. Henry Yourger is missing, believed to be in the western part of the state, with his wife distraught. Millard left King area days ago, feared to have harmed herself.

Special Telegram reports a massive blast near Cahokia Illinois collapsed the frame dwelling of John Spencer a dynamite worker. Spencer and his five year old son were killed their bodies found in debris while Mrs Spencer was believed absent across the river in St Louis. The explosion arising from home use of dynamite caused the wreck.
The Humboldt with Captain Edwards on the San Francisco to Eureka run was due Tuesday but had not arrived by evening. A tug was sent up the coast to search for her as telegraph lines to Eureka have been down for three days, leaving her status unknown.
Early today sympathizers of the Dubs faction of the Evangelical Church at Akron retook possession of the building, forcing Bowman faction to seek court injunction. Deputy served injunction again. Dubs plan to hold services tomorrow amid anticipated trouble.
Burglars entered the home of Benjamin Powell on West Cherry Street at an early hour and gagged and bound servant Mary Drumheller. They secured 120 from a bureau drawer before escaping, with such burglaries becoming frequent in the area over the past two days.
Special Telegram reports in Norristown that Maurice Farrell, a drover from Green Tree in Lower Merion township, was dragged for over a mile after his horses ran away. He fell from the wagon, his skull crushed as his head was dragged along the road.
The Coward Line steamer Etruria arrived from New York reporting one seaman with a fractured leg and another with a head injury after a fierce Sunday gale. Police in the Fourth district have secured a portrait of their late comrade, Elmer Findlay, killed by a youth named Cascaden, to be exhibited in a Chestnut street window tomorrow.
Charles Miller of Fourth and Race streets was arrested after midnight on a charge of stealing dry goods from J. H. Green's store on Second Street. The incident involved Tar, Licorice and Tolu Waters amid threats and confusion surrounding the alleged robbery.

Slight losses were reported at The Philadelphia Lace Novelty House at 25 South Second Street where a fire stemming from hot ashes in a second floor box caused about $50 damage. A minor blaze in Mrs. McGonigal’s residence at 1825 Camac Street was caused by an exploding oil stove. Jacob Wagner’s three story dwelling at 4454 Wakefield Street suffered about $100 damage from a fire started in a clothes closet.
The Budget shown today in Madrid's Cortes reports a deficit of 1 002 600 dollars after an estimated 1 380 000 reduction in expenditures and a 5 250 000 rise in revenue from new taxes. Salaries for government officials are cut by ten percent. The tax on treasury payments will not apply to interest on the external debt. The Budget improves the Bourse.
Samuel Stallings, shot Thursday morning by Joseph W. McCartney, died at Maryland General Hospital. Stallings said the shooting was unprovoked. McCartney was arrested immediately and jailed awaiting outcome of Stallings wounds.

Carl Kirk a Port Richmond taxidermist accidentally severed an artery while skinning a dog yesterday and was taken to the German Hospital. In a market scene at Twelfth and Market streets Mrs Kornhoeffer of 2522 East York Street was struck by paralysis and moved to Jefferson Hospital.
