Billy Dacey of Brooklyn defeated Jack Costello of Bay City in two rounds on Long Island. The purse was 250 dollars with about forty local spectators, Dacey landing a left jab to end the bout.

New York, February 5. The surface road tie-up was declared off this evening after the executive committee of National District 226 District Division No. 1 reported favorable terms. The committee met and officially ended the strike, ending the disruption on New York surface roads.
Betsy Brady posted bail for theft of a ribbon at an Eighth Street shop. A Greenleaf resident paid a fine for dog fighting. Magistrates sentenced a man for a street incident and a local minister delivered a Ireland themed lecture at the MBE Church.
February 5. The House committee on education favors reporting a compulsory education bill for children ages 8 to 14. An amendment would require school directors to provide clothing and books for the poor. Also advancing is a bill to establish a nautical school in Philadelphia.
John Kane an elderly resident of 1545 Ridge avenue says he withdrew 650 from a bank to travel to Ireland. After an evening at Isaac Snyder’s oyster saloon with George White the money vanished while he slept in his room. Kane and White were detained for a magistrate hearing as the investigation continues.
The Nineteenth Ward Democratic executive committee met at 52% Susquehanna Avenue last night and patched a breach in the Councilmanic ticket. Declining candidates Linde Schwerdfeger and Eagan were replaced by Harry Myers and Harry Nolley, restoring a full ticket with John Mulholland, Jane and Harrison Duffield for School Directors and W. A. Foster for Select. Nicholas Eagan was persuaded to stay on the ticket.
Albany February 5 report on a Pine Lake disaster where twenty four teams hauled logs on the ice. The ice gave way after seven teams reached shore, plunging the rest with horses into the water. none of the bodies had been recovered at that time.
A lively fire on Broadway near No 843 to 848 caused extensive damage across an L-shaped building reaching to 57 59 East Thirteenth Street. Osiel and Co importers of Japanese art novelties suffered losses totaling 25 000 to 30 000 with other tenants including H Juilmard 3000 and Bach Bros among the affected shops and studios. The total damage to the structure was about 2 500.
The First division of the General Service Corps of the United States army and naval forces met at Tenth and Spring Garden streets last night to organize the corps. A charter was received yesterday afternoon and the division already has one hundred members with fifteen new members admitted last night. Officers will meet Friday to organize the grand body.
A fragment of the Cliff Dwellers, once thought extinct, is reportedly living in the San Mateo Mountains and has also been seen in the Black Range. The creatures are described as very small, not more than three feet tall, and wild. Reliable men vouch for the sightings and plans to capture them when snow melts.
James O Rourke ex letter carrier tumbled from second to first floor through an open shaft at the Electric Light Company building on Sansom Street. He suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Jefferson Hospital with injuries deemed serious but not necessarily fatal.
Washington February 5 The conferrees on the Territories admission bill met for two hours this morning and reviewed the entire situation without reaching a result. They did not discuss the bill by sections but may take that approach at a subsequent meeting.
Henry Henson, 87, a lodging-house keeper at 403 South Second Street, shot and killed his wife Ida after a day of quarrels tied to his drinking. He was arrested at the scene as the body lay by Ida.
The Odd Fellows Hall Association bought the Broad and Cherry street corner from Philadelphia and Reading Rail for 140000. A new building will rise after current tenant leases end or are settled. An intestate estate of George Howell is administered by Fidelity Insurance Trust and Safe Deposit, with about 200000 in real estate portion.
Linxcouy Neb February 5 Two boilers exploded in the engine room at the State Hospital for the Insane destroying the engine house. Two patients were killed and two injured while two engineers suffered critical injuries that doctors fear will prove fatal before morning.
