The German ship Carl under Captain Backthaus, from Baltimore, lost three men in a January storm. Two boats were carried away, decks swept, rail and wheel smashed as the ship Bramen. The Italian bark Silvio from Pensacola to Liverpool faced heavy weather. Captain Benvento and the mate drowned, wheel boat and bulwarks damaged. Sailmaker John Murray of Lina assisted and sailed Silvio into Falmouth.

Fight in South Broad building ends with stabbing
Jacob H. Reese, a 44 year old janitor living on South Broad street, was stabbed twice in the bar room by Jacob Addison, a night bartender for H. Shuster, during a fight. Reese was taken to Jefferson Hospital for treatment. Addison escaped and had not been captured by late night.

Family of Five Perishes in Iowa House Fire
Albert Cooley a farmer near McGregor Iowa and his wife two sons and a young daughter were found burned to death in their home after a fire started in a shed adjoining the dwelling. Cooley moved coals from the stove to the shed around midnight, the shed ignited the house, and the fire killed the entire family.
