Detectives Gray and Halfish investigated a sensational burglary story at a Chestnut Street shoe shop. The watchman claimed masked burglars bound him and planned to blast the safe, but officers found no entry or loot. The proprietor called it a hallucination and refused a watchman interview.
W T Newry colored confessed to killing Henry Depugh and Ross and setting fire to their house in March last near Alton Illinois. Motive traced to Depugh killing a dog years earlier and enmity followed. Newry shot Depugh and Ross then fled after looting clothes and stealing a pistol and shotgun. He was moved to Edwardsville to avoid lynching amid black community unrest at Rocky Fork.
Mary Lewis, about 55, was shot in the neck and killed during an attempted assault at Charlies Twitchell’s North Bridgeport residence. James Blake George Butler and John Bishop were arrested. Bishop claimed accidental shooting as Twitchell and wife slept intoxicated.
By order of Coroner Robinson the body of Dennis Cowhey of Laurel Hill, buried January 21 at St Marys Cemetery Flushing, was exhumed at Hunter's Point. His daughter in law Catharine Collyer died Thursday from arsenical poisoning. her husband died the next day with identical symptoms. Post mortem found arsenic in the stomach. specimens sent to Professor Muller for analysis.
Washington report notes a dull session as Ways and Means weighs amendments to Morrison tariff. Lawmakers from Pennsylvania New York New Jersey and Ohio express concerns that the bill harms industries especially pottery and labor while fearing insufficient reform and possible revenue gains.

The Coroner's Jury found Bernard Short was killed by a blow from an axe like instrument wielded by an unknown person. A witness saw two men near the chestnut tree shortly before the time of death. Short warned his wife he might not return by dark and urged not to wait up. No arrests yet, but suspects are named.
R C Israel proprietor of the Chicago Beef Market at 723 Vine street found his vault robbed during the night. Burglars created a back wall opening large enough for a boy to pass through and stole 5 in money a 1000 government bond and a 150 note. The bond and note were recovered in the alley but the money is missing. Police suspect a boy assisted the crime. no arrests yet.
In BroperFrorp Maine on February 5 the jury convicts Mrs Barrows and Oscar Blaney of murdering Thomas Barrows. Blaney retracts plea but confesses to murder in the first degree. Both show restraint and fortitude as verdicts are read. case proceeds to full court for legal questions.
Harry Nfall eighteen? correction: 17 years old of 607 Barclay street was shot twice in the head by his older brother after a quarrel over a sweetheart. The assailant, two years older, drew a seven shot pistol and fired two rounds. Harry was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital with non fatal injuries. The older brother was arrested at Third district and will face a hearing.
While walking near an city alley Lewis Nsorsel was attacked from behind. One assailant choked him and another rifled pockets. Two Third district officers stopped the pair and arrested them. At police headquarters the suspects were identified as Christopher Obnson of 205 Allen street and William Low Head of 119 Green street. They face a hearing today.
The Pennsylvania Railroad Company sued the Central Railroad of New Jersey and the New York and Long Branch Road in Trenton. Court clerk Oliphant presided as the lease between the companies was introduced with testimony from John C. Lima Barker Gummere Jr. John W. Watson and ex president Reckless on the lease finalization.
The county commissioners work to supply departments with stationery and blanks while determining bidder responsibility under a modern manufacturers requirement. The finance committee meets today to consider proposals and action.
Charles Skirm pleaded guilty in Judge Yerkes Court of the Quarter Sessions to a bill of assault and battery on Police Officer Robert Creighton with intent to kill. He and an accomplice were caught with a stolen wagon and team. Skirm fired at Creighton, wounding him slightly in the head. Skirm sentenced to three years in the penitentiary.
WasineTon February 5 reports new Post Office at Time Greene county with Postmaster Jacob B Young Brownsdale John Fitzpatrick Time and Bilis McCracken Marrow. Bond accepted of David L Wray as Postmaster at Bellwood Blair county.
In Wheeling report, the Morrison residence in Pocahontas county burned late last night. William Morrison his wife and four children escaped from the room but two young girls aged 7 and 11 in a separate room were burned to death.
Cincinnati dispatch from February 5 reports at the Kentucky senator caucus the first ballot named Blackburn 68 and Williams 57 with Blackburn nominated unanimously. Harcourt had previously withdrawn Carlisle from consideration.
