Special Telegram from Wilkesbarre reports a catastrophic flood at the Jeanesville No. 1 slope mine. Eighteen miners died as water burst into a long idle shaft, while survivors fought for life amid rushing torrents. pumps and engineers race to reach entombed workers and recover bodies.
Workmen believed lower gangway workings were safely distant from safety limits, yet observers warned that driving them too near the water could trigger a dreadful accident. The crew had no idea of how close their alignments lay to the danger zone.
The United Electric Equipment Company of New Jersey seeks a receiver through the U S District Court to wind up affairs and force Winstrom Motor Company to settle Contracts for electric railway and light plant projects. Bay City Michigan February 4 No information has been received from the fishermen since o clock last night. All were safe at Fish Vill near Fish Point. No lives were lost and all the fishermen accounted for. Many thrilling escapes occurred as men fell between cakes of ice but were rescued without trouble.
The January 1890 exports of Sheffield cutlery to the United States valued at £15,415. Under the new tariff law, January this year saw exports to the United States amounting to £8,381.
The personal property of Charles Mertz a Reading butcher was seized by the sheriff. Wilson Kintzer of Johnsville had farm stock seized on an execution for 600 dollars. Willie Dry 14 son of George of Bowers Station disappeared last Saturday afternoon and police in several cities are notified to locate him.
The Committee of Fifty in Philadelphia outlines campaigns to back endorsed candidates for City Council and oppose others. Mass meetings planned at Germantown and Kenderton halls with speakers including Thomas Meehan and Stockton Bates. Other meetings slated in the Twentieth ward as well.

A five person gang including James Motz Sr James Motz Jr Julia Motz Frank Spencer and Mrs Spencer was captured at 202 East Girard avenue after a months long Pennsylvania Railroad car theft spree. About 8500 in loot including calico underwear and clothing was recovered in Trenton and Philadelphia and a horse and wagon stolen there was found. The group faced charges for breaking into cars and about twenty residences and stores, with many trains and cars already identified as targets.
In Harrisburg on February 4 Senators Thompson and Hines denied claims they nearly engaged in a physical clash during the Mammoth Mine inquiry in Westmoreland. They insisted no incident occurred and their relations remain cordial. Hines attributed alleged negligence to the ire boss rather than the mine owners.
Special Telegram reports another mine accident at No 3 of the Susquehanna Coal Co in Nanticoke. Five men were at work looting pillars when a demolished pillar released flood water. Two escaped while three were killed W R Cragle W Lyman and John Levinski. The mine remains badly flooded and bodies not yet recovered.
The Hartford morning session reports the Senate receiving the House canvass, a lengthy debate, and a party line vote approving the Senate has fulfilled its constitutional duty. The body adjourned to await further action on the case.
Orierto, February 4. Police report convincing proof that insurgents in the recent revolt were in league with Spanish revolutionists, as investigation continues.
Legislative panel in Harrisburg examined local bankers about state and private banking supervision. Witnesses split on boosting state control with J C Bomberger opposing more regulation while W W Jennings and John Uhler opposed strengthening state oversight. K Alricks favored general supervision and frequent examinations under Auditor General. The committee adjourned to meet at Hotel Lafayette in Philadelphia Friday at 11 AM.

In a Common Pleas action No 1 yesterday Isaac Y Dutton aged 45 a carpenter of 708 Washington Ave appeared as defendant in a breach of promise suit brought by Amanda Grosser 23 of 1104 Sydman Street The plaintiff testified to a relationship starting October 1888 the birth of a child on December 23 1889 and alleged payments for furniture jewelry and a future home Dutton claimed plaintiff accepted $50 in full settlement and a sealed verdict was pending this morning
Report from the New York sub-committee outlines a Pan Republic Congress to be held in 1893 in the United States in a city chosen by the committee of 200. A four year old girl, Nannie McKnight of 515 Locust, was struck by a team at Fifth and Walnut during dusk. She suffered a compound leg fracture and was rushed to Penn Hospital where doctors fear death. The driver, Christian, was arrested and to face a magistrate hearing today.

London February 4 ship owners sue and the London docks joint committee abandons discharging ships. A conflict begins as owners may need 2,500 leaders and unloaders to meet typical port demands and an entire police division to safeguard workers.
The House committee on Federal relations heard arguments to repeal the militia laws. Adjutant General Hart General Kenny and Colonel Marshall led the defense with J Alexander Fulton for the opposition. The military argued they met complaints and won committee support.
A man named Reilly and his wife, caretakers on a County Cavan farm near Ballyjamesduff, have been found murdered. Police authorities say arrests are sought in connection with the case.
The Civil Service Board examined 4 applicants yesterday for Post Office positions. Among the candidates were 13 colored men and 80 colored men noted in the roll.
A report compares the handwriting of Colonel William B. Smith and Colonel Bonnaffon on the 1889 headquarters warrant. The article notes Smith did not claim the title on the forged signature and admits imitation was close, with experts able to distinguish only by careful inspection. A Harrisburg photograph facsimile of the warrant back is reproduced.
Fac similes show Colonel Bonnaffon’s signature and Colonel Smith’s imitation. The forged works deceived several experts who know Bonnaffon’s handwriting. Major Batt questions whether Smith had the right to imitate another’s signature and limits comment after being briefed on the Board of DTs meeting details.
Facsimile on the back shows Smith imitating Bonnaffon’s signature and Smith’s own signature on a warrant. Capt Machold, senior captain, says Smith may have a right to the money but must account for it. Officers pledge secrecy and urge full investigation, with possible court martial or criminal action if wrongdoing is found. Colonel Smith maintains he signed beneath Bonnaffon’s name, which the warrant reportedly disproves.
Eda Davis, a young weaver at John Stafford’s Gingham Mills in Manayunk, had her right arm crushed yesterday afternoon while fixing a machine. She was taken unconscious to her home at 4581 Baker Street. a physician was summoned and amputation is expected. The news item also reports on State Alliance presidents meeting in Washington, Kansas City bank reopening plans, and Senator Hearst’s stable condition.
A travel stained 16 year old Samuel De Wolfe told Newark police Chief Hopper a sensational tale of attackers on Richmond Avenue and being forced to Newark to beg. His mother called at 2068 Sargent Street denying the story while reporting his younger brother Mitchell missing and the boy’s repeated past run ins with the House of Correction. The case is being investigated by Chief Hopper and Chief Detectives Wood.
A sleeping car on the West bound Canadian Pacific express derailed near a Lake Superior trestle at Schreiber after a broken axle, plunging fifty to sixty feet. Ten passengers were aboard with four killed. others injured. A porter unharmed. Surgeons assisted on site and from Port Arthur.
James A. Owenby, witness before the silver pool committee, was arrested on a warrant for obtaining money under false pretenses. He had cashed a about $17 check at Hanover National Bank after the silver law, which was later refused, and he offered to pay the man once his witness fees were received. He accompanied an officer to court.
Charles Watson a 40 year old teamster of 703 Lisle street was seriously injured when an iron frame slipped from a wagon at the Times Annex yesterday morning. He was hauling frames for George Young. the frame crushed his leg and broke it in two. He was removed to the Pennsylvania. Pottstown Republicans Nominate Ticket in Follow-up. Vienna reports the Emperor accepting Privy Councilor Dr J Dunajewski’s resignation as Finance Minister due to ill health. Appointed June 26 1880, he receives the cross of St Stephen and lifetime Reichsrat membership. Herr Sternbach succeeds him as Minister of Finance.
Special Telegram to The Traces from Harrisburg reports the Dauphin county committee endorsing Governor Pattison’s veto of the Force bill resolution and his pledge to a thoroughly Democratic administration. Naudain Hamilton was re elected chairman with G W Cunkle and H Wells Bozer serving as secretaries.
The Gaelic reports a severe Java quake on December 12 affecting west and middle Java. Joana town suffered the most with the Chinese quarter wrecked and European quarters nearly uninhabitable. Twelve people were killed and seventeen injured.
Special telegram reports Taylor Works in Chambersburg will suspend operations for an indefinite period. The plant, maker of steam engines, has operated about ten years but has not been prosperous. It employed 240 workers recently, with about 60 discharged, leaving 180 to be laid off.
MASSILLON Ohio February 4 A rear end collision on the Cleveland Lorain and Wheel ing Railroad at Beach City this morning between two coal trains killed C W Lainman fireman who was in the caboose of the forward train and burned John McConnell brakeman of Lorain so badly that he will die Two tramps who were also in the caboose were injured The engine was thrown from the track and the caboose demolished.

About 2,000 conscripts marched through Manoage in Hainaut Province to protest compulsory military service. They sang the Marseillaise and waved placards reading Down with the Blood Tax as the crowd voiced antiwar sentiment.
Special Telegram reports John Duceman a miner at the Neilson shaft was killed today by a keg powder explosion. The blast occurred near a lamp, causing immediate death.
Monthly counts show 6199 visitors. Tax receipts for January total 1,307,282.88, up about 100,000 from the previous year. A fire at De Muerer & Sons in Newmarket and Margaretta streets caused slight damage from chemical combustion.
In Lowpox on February 4 the House of Commons debated Gladstone’s motion to remove Catholic disabilities from high offices. He argued the 1829 reform and 1863 repeal erased barriers, noting Home Secretary is Catholic and that other offices remain open. The motion failed 223 to 256 after debate.
