The Sanf ord political feud claims Goebel as victim as the avenger, warned men, and friends who swore vengeance aided by conditions. A rifle bullet pierced the mail coat and struck through his lungs ending the confrontation.
Telegram reports hint that Goebel was shot by a Sanford vengeance seeker, not a political assassin. Sanford's friends, including Senator Blackburn, allegedly swore to avenge Sanford’s death, altering Kentucky political tensions as Goebel lay dying. Goebel reportedly wore steel mail armor. whether he revealed this on his deathbed remains unclear.
A letter from John C. Deuber of Canton Ohio offers sympathy and help to 81 locked out engravers at Keystone Watch Case. He invites names and addresses and proposes sending work to Philadelphia or relocating a cooperative factory there. Engravers cheer the gesture and await terms from Keystone. Deuber, a Canton magnate, has long opposed a rival cartel and built a vast watch case operation.
Washington reports the transport Manauense, bound for San Francisco from Manila on December 8, is missing. Officials fear for the ship and its troops after earlier ships suffered from poison gas exposure. Other ships leaving Manila after that date have reached San Francisco, but no trace has been found of this vessel or its personnel.
Washington February 3 The Senate committee on privileges and elections recommended no further proceedings in the case against Senator Beott of West Virginia, thus approving his continued Senate seat. The committee was unanimous with one exception Senator Pettus may submit a minority report.
The Salvation Army leader General Booth Tucker arrived in New York aboard the Lacania from Liverpool with passengers including George Grossmith the comedian and Garcia Conde the Mexican General at Liverpool.
A family home on North Forty seventh street suffered a fatal fire after Elmer Likens upended a lamp in the kitchen while the parents were away. Frank Likens Jr., 3 months, and siblings Elmer 7, Hattie 6, Frank 3, died or were overcome by smoke. Mrs Likens is hospitalized and in shock. neighbors assist others. Firefighters and police responded to the local alarm after the lamp exploded.
In Scranton on February 3 George Shotwell was blown to pieces and Fred Molineux badly burned by a dynamite blast at the Consumers' Powder Company corn mill near Jessup. The explosion, which occurred before work began, wrecked the mill and another nearby structure, limiting casualties.
Republican voters faced scrutiny as Tax Receiver William J. Roney announced a likely 40 percent purge of a 30 000 name poll tax list citing fictitious names and duplicate handwriting. The move touched factional tensions with anti Quay leaders and prompted plans for court action and warrants.

A large fire swept George's Hill after hot coals from skaters at Parkside pond near Fifty-second street and Parkside avenue sparked flames. Patrolmen and a sergeant aided with brooms until engine No. 41 arrived with the chemical engine, limiting damage mainly to burned brms on the hill summit.
In Batavia New York on February 3 Mrs Lavina Egiloff was arrested for first degree murder after allegedly poisoning her husband Henry Egloff at their Corfu area home. Police say the poison was given January 14 and the motive involved the woman’s affair with Albert Wilhelm. The couple, married March 8 1802 at Corfu, had three children. Mrs Egiloff is 24 and Henry 20.
The Post Office Department reports difficulty in Ritchie county West Virginia due to a small-pox scare and several star routes have been closed. Officials say the danger belief is unwarranted.
State Senator William Goebel, Democratic contender for Kentucky governor, died at 6.44 pm after a vain struggle. He expired as brother Justin Goebel reached the Capitol Hotel and amid a chorus of hopes his supporters looked to J. W. Beckham for lieutenant governor. The Republican legislature and courts were at odds, and mourners gathered as the die was cast.
New York reports juror Manhelm Brown in the Molineux poison murder case is improving. A physician says his rheumatism has eased and he should be able to attend court on Monday, resuming his seat in the jury box.
