London dispatch notes Buller has begun a new movement toward Ladysmith with orders for an advance by morning. Reported plan may target Honger’s Poort near Bethany on the Tugela, with possible cavalry moves toward Acton Homes road. no enemy sighted.
The report recalls Colonel Long’s decision to push batteries near the river at Colenso under heavy fire. It notes there were no Boers on that side of the Tugela and that the batteries had to operate under enemy guns, yet Long fought on for over an hour before being gravely wounded.
In the Twelfth division election stauds case the jury convicted Samuel R. Markley assessor Joseph Hogan and Franke Taylor alias Pearce Yellow Frank after a rapid deliberation. The verdict followed charges of conspiracy to commit election fraud including false assessments impersonation of officers and ballot box stuffing. Judge Bregg ordered four days for possible new trial motions.
A deadly skating incident on the Schuylkill River at Fountain meets tragedy as William Paschall aged 52 drowns after he and his daughter Minnie 18 fall through thin ice. Three other skaters fall in but are saved as guards battle the icy river and warn others with lanterns and barriers.
Boatsmen E. E. Larkins, a Maine hero from the lost battleship Maine, rescued three skaters from the Schuylkill river at League Island Navy Yard. The youths Harry Devlin, Richard Yaeger, and Andrew Weiss were stranded on thin ice while officials had warned against skating. Larkins tied a rope around his waist and braved holes and treacherous ice to reach them.

Joseph Cook driver of fire engine No. 21 died at St. Josephs Hospital from a fractured skull after his team reeled to avoid a Union Traction car at American street and Fairmount avenue. He lived at 428 George street, was married with three children. The fire at Louis Widner residence 525 North American street caused $200 damage.
Police officer Blind and State Representative John R. Lloyd testified for the defense as they pursued the claim that fugitives Roseman Scott Kennedy Kenney and Wesley falsified returns and staged ballot box stuffing. Hogan corroborated his father that Roseman and Scott lived at 502 South Fifth Street and acted as election officers, while Marshalling contradictions arose over immunity and money offered to a witness.
Four of George Winans's children ages two to eight perished when a frame house in Boutonville Westchester county burned after the parents had left the home. The parents returned to find the structure destroyed and no trace of the youngsters, presumed dead in the blaze.
The 16 year old Joseph Germon of Towson Baltimore county fled in the early morning from love troubles to Latherville with no coat or hat. His body and a pistol were found later in woods near his sweethearts home. Police described the death as self inflicted. In a separate report a thief smashed a bulk window at Jacob Barnecoff hardware at 257 North Ninth street and stole $80 worth of revolvers.
