A Philadelphia public school or educational institution outside Philadelphia voting to receive the most support will gain a library of books worth five hundred dollars. The collection aims to boost general culture and language through well chosen titles, aligning with Superintendent Brooks's recommended list.
Philadelphia public school teachers who receive the most votes in the City Library Contest will earn a six-volume Century Dictionary. The second, a Dickens Scott or Thackeray edition. the third, Lippincott Biographical Dictionary. the fourth, Shakespeare edited by Richard Grant White. the fifth, History of the American Revolution by John Fiske. Five non Philadelphia top voters get the same prizes. Two boys and two girls with the most coupons or votes win bicycles, with a fifth bicycle to the next highest. New York reports two Hoboken blazes within hours claim seven lives and leave many homeless. A three story Newark Street frame building housed the Schoeders. a mother and five children perished. A second fire at Nos 158 to 159 Street killed a little girl. survivors recount thrilling rescues as flames drove residents to windows and ladders. The father, playing cards nearby, reappeared after bodies were removed.
Allen Grace shot his wife three times and wounded a man in Cambridge Maryland after a quarrel sparked by alleged infidelity. Mrs Grace, gravely wounded in the temple and behind the ear, is dying. Grace fled as authorities pursued him.
In Wilmington on January 31 Mrs Basan A Trusty a servant at Victor DuPonts house died tonight under mysterious circumstances. She was passing along Delaware avenue when she was taken and carried into the New Century Club where Dr J J Jones was summoned and saw her.
Policeman Hutchinson of the Twenty-Third District confronted a hatless intruder in a vacant Walter Street house after the thief led him to suspect noises. A brutal struggle followed with a lead pipe used as a weapon. Hutchinson, though knocked down, captured the assailant and recovered burglars tools and boat parts. The suspect was taken into custody as the investigation continued.
The Enquirer reports from Youngstown that James T. Cheney a colored politician of Cincinnati will serve as White House doorkeeper under President McKinley. They served together in the same regiment during the war and McKinley joked of a job. the position pays 1000 a year with no limit to trips.
Canton Ohio January 31 The committee on special trains to Washington announced limited space for correspondents is exhausted by applications from those assigned to Canton on the campaign. It was the president elects wish to honor those reporters here have paid tribute to his wishes by their assignments.
Ocean steamers bound for New York are listed with routes from Liverpool and Havre, sailing from New York to Glasgow and Bremen. Partial notes indicate arrivals and departures with incomplete text.
Matthew McCarlin and companions skated from Frankford to the New Jersey shore on the Upper Delaware River. Near Fisher's Point the ice cracked and McCarlin fell in. His friends built a human bridge but could not save him as he sank beneath the ice.
A man nearly carried off by a cake of ice was dragged back by Bragly and others as Mc Carlin did not resurf ace. His body remained unrecovered early this morning despite searches with lanterns, worry over an undercurrent.
A late night sled collision on a Bellefonte thoroughfare left fifteen youths injured four severely. Fred Thompson suffered multiple injuries including a broken jaw and ankle while Bruce Barnhart had a broken leg. Florence Jacobs, Jennie Irvin, and others sustained head cuts and bruises.
Three masked men robbed H. T. Hellman Catholic supply on Baltimore Avenue Kansas City last evening. One held the owner at gunpoint while the others rifled the cash drawer and seized about $1100 in gold. They fled in a Buick with the getaway crew.
William Albert Dunning, who murdered Mrs. Mary Denning at her home Friday morning and then shot himself, died after signing a sworn statement two hours later. He claimed no motive and said he concealed his actions from a likely motive. The attack on two young Denning girls was thwarted by their escape.
Special telegram from Wilmington dated January 31 reports the Union Republican county committee meeting yesterday. Six men were appointed, three from the city and three from the county, to work on a compromise ticket. The dispatch notes committee action and the intention to unite factions for a shared slate.

Crowds from across the coal region visited the North Shamokin mountain cave in where Miss Maud Gothie died. A man identified as Madkiff died from electrocution during a battery test at the Millville electric light station. Witnesses say he touched a live wire and an iron bolt, completing a circuit with about twelve hundred volts, collapsing instantly. Despite efforts to revive him, he died at the scene.
Joseph Bopp suffers a fractured skull and Casper Stephania is jailed after a workplace dispute at Cambria Yards. Bopp, in Memorial Hospital, is not expected to recover while Stephania awaits further action in City Prison.
Kansas City grand jury added seven indictments yesterday, targeting men linked to the Bitter-Oldham faction in gambling circles. Fifteen men were arrested as the probe widens beyond the Findlay group. A separate note highlights G. H. Mumm's Extra Dry wine shipping to the market with strong 1896 case figures.
