A smooth swindler posing as a dry goods dealer visited Philadelphia homes at 2221 Trinity Place claiming goods salvaged from a wrecked steamer. He showcased samples and false catalogs, promising very low prices and urging quick purchases, but the householder detected the ruse and dismissed the sale as a trick.
A New York City scam involving dry goods swindlers ends with complaints of short measure and misrepresentation. A head clerk at Girard House received a letter connected to the fraud from a North Seventeenth Street resident whose two dress fabric purchases were short by two to four yards. The elusive Mr Forbes fled, leaving buyers eager for refunds.
An extra freight train near Fort Recovery is seized by a gang of about six tramp robbers. Conductor Reed mails aid, a brakeman is beaten, and a posse led by Marshal Woods pursues the raiders toward Mackinaw Junction. Several tramps are captured, others escape into the woods and vow revenge.

William McKane was admitted to Cooper Hospital Camden yesterday suffering from injuries after being whipped and tossed from his home at 107 North Front Street by his sons Robert and Frank and Eugene Andrews. He appeared slightly intoxicated and was brought to the hospital by patrol wagon. Doctors found he had a kick to the side and a gash to the head in the incident.

New Sierra La January 31 Ex President Cleveland and party arrived from Petit Anse Isle. A large delegation met him at the depot and invited him to the Teche Exchange where he greeted many citizens. He then visited the exchange and met numerous ladies and gentlemen before leaving for New Orleans tonight.
West Newton Pa January 81 two Italian and black coal miners were fatally wounded and a third will lose a leg after a twenty minute riot in Smithton using revolvers knives razors and billies. Three men lay on the ground and about a dozen others were wounded.
Special Telegram to Tas Times from Bellefonte reports malignant diphtheria striking the county’s lower end. In the Luse family a daughter died within days, followed by four more deaths including the father and another son. The family is buried in a single grave with the daughter, while the widow and remaining daughter lie gravely ill. Diphtheria is described as widespread and causing many residents to leave the area temporarily.
Miss Laura Warwick, shot in the eye by her mother last Thursday afternoon in Atlantic City New Jersey, is greatly improved and doctors think her eye may be saved. Authorities have not yet taken action. the motive and mental state are under review.

Annie Falk aged 17 fell thirty feet from a stairway at Temple Furnace while with her father and another girl. She struck steam pipes in the fall, suffering severe head wounds and internal injuries. condition described as probably fatal.
Captain George Clark recounts the dramatic rescue of ten men from the steam tug Edwin H. Webster after a savage gale drove the craft and two scows to drift at sea.
