Detectives Wittick and Campbell of Columbia arrest Thomas Bird and Charles Turner in Lancaster County jail for attempted murder in Williamsport Maryland. The two colored men fled a mob that blew Turner's brother’s house with dynamite. Turner was wounded, Bird implicated in stabbing. They fear lynching if sent to Williamsport while boatmen remain angered.
In Hazleton on December 21 George Waverick, a Hungarian, was attacked by three drunken countrymen, one his brother, as he walked from Mountain Scenery Hotel to Milnesville. They stabbed him and beat him until insensible. George Gasper and John Dulick intervened and were assaulted and stabbed. Authorities later arrested John Waverick Mike Buback and Andrew Wall for the assault. All victims were hospitalized.
In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania a major explosion at Baltimore No 2 shaft of the Delaware and Hudson Coal Company trapped over twenty miners. Fourteen were rescued alive by rescuers after hours of peril while others remained un Accounted. The blast sent smoke and carbon dioxide up the shaft prompting rescue teams to battle gas and fire as they pulled men to safety and listed several names of those saved and injured.
A two and a half year old girl Bertha Lee died after she toppled an oil stove on the third floor of 931 Alder street. Two men who lived in the house rescued her 13 month old brother from a burning bed but she died moments after the incident.

John J. Egan age 25 of 1916 Hoffman Street died at Methodist Hospital from a fractured skull sustained last Saturday when he fell from a Brooklyn battleship turret.
Miss Laura Bennington, a Protestant, killed herself at her Hopewood home after a feud with her Catholic lover Jerry Lynch over marriage rites. Dinner with Lynch preceded their agreed January 12 wedding date. a dispute over ceremony led to her suicide with her father's revolver.
Kate Hughes and Mary Roach, both of 828 Es sex street, and William Fee, a colored man, were held on $1,000 bail each for court on charges of larceny. Vincent Monachella was robbed while unconscious on Essex street after a Friday afternoon fall. Lee allegedly struck him, then the trio divided the stolen $100.
In Shenandoah on December 21 a 4-year-old girl Mary Gobinsky died after she and her 7-year-old brother John sparked a blaze while playing with matches. A straw filled dry goods box caught fire. the girl fell into the flames. The brother’s clothes also caught fire but neighbors saved him.
A dispatch from Constantinople reports Istanbul fears a rising by the young Turks. Fifty young Turk officers have fled to escape arrest and high ranking officers are to be tried by court martial at the Yildiz Palace. Security around the Sultan has been doubled and approaching suspects are arrested.
Washington December 21 The condition of Senator Warren of Wyoming who recently had appendicitis surgery in Chicago excites grave apprehension in senatorial circles. It is believed Warren cannot recover. His death would risk a Populist or silver Republican victory, hindering tariff passage in the Senate at the extra session.
Vincenzo Friezo, 20, was fatally shot when Benedetto Saffiero accidentally discharged a gun during a hunt in Bethlehem. Friezo died at St Luke's Hospital shortly after. The coroner's jury exonerated Saffiero.
Forecast for Tuesday in Eastern New York, eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey calls for light local snows then clearing weather. Temperature trends: high near 39, low around 29, with slightly colder air and light variable winds. Yesterday’s temperatures show a morning reading of 30, afternoon 39, and evening 35.

A devastating blaze at Allen's Theatre on Albany and George streets in New Brunswick destroys the five story 1872 building. An explosion sparked the fire around 12:30 am, collapsing a rear wall and threatening nearby structures. Firemen rescue the unconscious stage manager John O'Brien and others as the theatre is reduced to ruins with a loss estimated at 300000 dollars and insured for about 30000.
The dead body of Jesse G. Gould, vice president of the Leland and Smith Company which recently failed, was found in a fence corner on Toledo's outskirts. A bullet hole, revolver by his side, and valuables on his person point to self inflicted death. He seemed despondent over the firm's impending failure. Death occurred ten to twelve days before discovery.
Pittsburg Pa December 21 The railroad miners in this district completed a vote on the operators wage scale proposal and showed overwhelming acceptance. Officials declare sixty cents as the district rate after December 31 averting a strike by over six thousand men.
Sub-Policeman Quinton of the Second district arrested Frederick Lochart, 28, with no home, at Fourth and Market streets yesterday afternoon for pickpocketing Mrs. Anna Dily of 1024 Thompson Street. Lochart held the pocketbook at the moment of arrest.
Detectives Bond and Murray arrested William Joucks aged 54 with no home after a boy leaving Gimbel's at Ninth and Market streets was found with two umbrellas and weaving materials in his possession, alleged thefts connected to Joucks.
