London December 1 The Blackburn gas explosion at the market yesterday destroyed three houses and burned rapidly. Rescue workers recovered four bodies by morning and five more later, with debris hindering access. The gasometer operator was arrested on murder charges but released on bail.
Springfield dispatch reports a fatal double tragedy at the Hotel Warwick. Proprietor George E. Barr lies dead on the second floor sitting room floor beside his wife, both shot. Police say Barr killed his wife and then himself. Mrs. Barr, formerly Miss Mary Ashley, appears seated in a chair with hat and coat. The couple occupied a three-room suite. noises were heard overnight but details remain unclear.
Edith Newton of the Mack Charles Opera Company attempted suicide by gas in her Stevens House room after a troubled romance with J B Bradley. The Philadelphia troupe, stranded after pay failure, had no show and Dorset figures show unpaid rent and a locked musical director for defrauding the landlord.
In St Paul a major insurance arson conspiracy is revealed with two gang members arrested by the Thiel detective service after a sting operation. Morris Michael and Detective Floyd fired a house to claim insurance profits, with prior confessions about burning five West St Paul homes.

PLANFIELD December 1 The city election was the most exciting in memory with both parties fielding strong candidates. Republicans claim a clean sweep with possible exception of Vincent Lovent, Democratic nominee for Councilman. The Council for 92 will include nine Republicans and two Democrats.
Elizabeth New Jersey December 1 officials report municipal vote with incumbent John Rankin Republican facing Frederick L Heidritter Democrat. Early indications show Rankin likely re elected as mayor in a close contest.
Isaac Sawtelle, held at the State Prison, provides a sworn affidavit admitting he killed his brother Hiram with a pistol in Maine where there is no capital punishment. The Supreme Court full bench will hear all parties and evidence on Sawtelle's new trial application Monday morning. the prisoner and witnesses will testify.
The Official Journal says M. de Giers the Russian Foreign Minister will report to the Czar on his tour of Italy France and Germany. It notes that after earlier misstatements a clearer view will emerge and that exchanges with other governments pledge reciprocal confidence and peace.

It will have two triple expansion engines and two steel boilers. A new ferryboat for the New York Ferry Company will be built, duplicating the Texas. The San Francisco was taken off dry dock at Mare Island and towed to the wharf. Admiral Brown awaits orders and may send the ship back to Chillan waters.
