Michael Sharkey a saloon-keeper at 1037 Germantown road was arrested on $800 bail to answer a charge by Bridget Downing a 20 year old woman living at Fifth and Oxford street. She swallowed laudanum after alleging he assaulted her a year ago and refused his marriage proposal. A doctor saved her life. Sharkey denied her testimony at the hearing.
Pressure date August 20 reports the Knights of Labor nipping in the bud a proposed iron and steel workers association. Charles H. Lightman notes charter denial due to assemblies not in good standing, with only three of seventeen aligned with the General Assembly. most assemblies are in Pittsburg. The circular says charter would be granted once laws are met, disappointing Pittsburg iron workers.
Hugo Feason, fourteen, employed at 722 Race street, was a captive before Magistrate Cobb yesterday. Twelve-year-old Annie McCann of 704 Wood street testified she was sent on an errand and Hugo seized her by the throat and threatened to choke her. The boy claimed it started after he teased him. He was held under forty dollars bail to answer.
The Commercial Hotel on Market Street, bought by William Weightman, will be torn down for a new building. It dates to about 1820 with Jesse Tomilson as proprietor in 1827. Tomilson and his father ran stage coaches and the Lancaster and Pittsburg Line, making the hotel a hub for travelers in the era, with daily 6 30 A M departures to Pittsburg and trips covering roughly 206 miles from Lancaster, often taking five days.
A new Lehigh and Lackawanna extension contract covers the line from Bethlehem toward Rosscommon Saylorsburg and on to Stroudsburg with grading to begin Monday The route aims to shorten travel to Philadelphia and divert summer travelers from the Belvidere Delaware route Bethlehem would become a cross roads hub for north south and east west lines and the Bath Railroad would form a through trunk line The project targets completion before winter and immediate work on the Saylorsburg to Stroudsburg segment after
John Thomas Ross colorfully confesses to killing Emily Brown aged white woman on December 10. He claims Perry urged the murder and that Albert Hawkins stabbed her. Ross says he and Hawkins carried the body to the Medical University and sold it for fifteen dollars. Perry was acquitted, Hawkins later released after a nolle prosequi.
August 2 report says Colonel D. Keller, president of the Board of County Commissioners, swore out a warrant charging John B. Campman, editor and proprietor of the Daily Herald, with criminal libel. Campman arrested and held on $1,000 bail as county officials face grave accusations of misappropriating large sums. grand jury censured the officials amid ongoing warfare with the Herald.
Montgomery Ala August 20 I V Vincent ex State Treasurer was sentenced today to five years in the penitentiary in each of two embezzlement convictions. He has appealed to the Supreme Court and remains in county jail until decision. Thirty seven other indictments against him.
Clarion reports Ella Dinsmore was convicted of murder as an accessory in the James Davis case. The trial spanned a week with Mrs Dinsmore displaying fortitude while King awaits execution after his death sentence.

August 20 in Whaitghton area Thomas Connelly of 11 Carpenter Street Philadelphia attempted to board a baggage car of the Delaware Railroad Express as it entered Wilmington depot. He was drawn under the wheels and badly mangled, likely a ride theft attempt. He is 20 years old.
Meadville August 20 William Layton of Bradford and Edad Ryan of Detroit met in six rounds under Marquis of Queensberry rules for a $100 purse. About one hundred sportsmen witnessed a bitter contest with many deeming the result a draw but the purse awarded to Ryan.
Desensia Brennan a ten year old girl, daughter of Mrs Edward Brennan, was fatally struck by a train while crossing a road at Centralia near the Lehigh Railroad. She was carrying water from a well near the Centralia Colliery when she was hit and died instantly.
Engineer Charles Kelly, badly hurt when his engine collided with the wild 805 on Thursday night, showed improvement last night. Dr. Lord of Presbyterian Hospital, where Kelly lies, said recovery is likely.
The Democratic committee of the Second Legislative district met in Wyoming today. Kk. K. Lara and Charles TD Campbell were neglected delegates to the State Convention. The gathering in Wilkesbarre set informal steps for district representation and future actions.
Emil L. Schoenberg, possibly identical to the 19th century forger Strauss, fled Chicago after a chance meeting with a former acquaintance in New York. Reports say Strauss’s calfskin trade frauds and bold ventures in New York led to liabilities of about 130000 dollars. In Chicago, Schoenberg, identified by a New York merchant, said he would never return and admitted folly while dining with Germania Brewery architect Mr. Wolf.

In Davenport Iowa on August 20 August Warmbold a well known citizen killed himself at his daughter’s grave in the city cemetery. He committed suicide by stooling himself after driving there with his wife. Excessive grief is believed to be the cause.
