Massed troops arrived as Camp Winfield Scott Hancock opened at Gretna with Brigadier Generals Hartranft Wiley Gobin and Col Dechert present. Mount Gretna reports a vast supply line for the 8.5 Guardsmen with 45000 pounds of fresh beef from Chicago, 12000 pounds of ham, 15000 pounds of candy and 4600 gallons of coffee. Commissary General Colonel J Granville Leach arranged contracts while Major General Hart ranft calls the encampment pivotal. total cost about 150000 dollars with transport savings of around 25000.

Rev Edward Corcoran temporarily assigned to St Agatha Philadelphia.
William Ambler aged thirty of Front and Norris streets collapsed from heat at Front and Cumberland streets and was taken home. James Mullen aged seventeen of 2207 Ellsworth street was prostrated in Jar dee’s brick yard at Twentieth street and Long lane and taken to the Pennsylvania Hospital.
Amid Minneapolis Knights of Labor district assembly elections locals protest anti administration delegates. Possible addition of administration delegates may balance the faction. The district, with 12000+ members, faces arrears and contested representation as alternates are named.
John Bluiitz, a Reading iron works employee, asked Alderman Denherd to arrange a wife from Castle Garden. A 28 year old German woman, Catherine Bauereither, arrived to meet her brother, whom she learns is dead. After a half hour interview they wed and plan to live on Miner Street.
London August 6 a strike by train bands disrupted Derby to Bristol passenger runs and halted most freight traffic. Midland Railway plans to sue workers who abandoned trains as stock fell 1 percent. Both sides claim victory though signs point to a possible collapse amid uneven organization.
Seashore traffic peaks as over 450 cars depart. epic rush from sweltering city warehouses to Atlantic City with 220 plus Atlantic City bound trains from Federal Street alone. West Jersey Camden and Atlantic and Philadelphia and Atlantic City lines report 333 cars to popular resorts. Cape May and Sea Isle/Ocean City receive smaller shares. All trains run on time with no accidents as officials declare peak season.
Information reports a brutal family murder last night twelve miles from Macon. Captain Richard Woolfalk his wife four children and Mrs West aunt to Mrs Woolfalk were found murdered with heads struck and throats cut. Tom G Woolfalk, the captain's son by a previous marriage, is suspected and arrested. Deputy Sheriff and Coroner visited the scene as details remain scarce.
August 6 Perrsperre The S notes potential trouble from a new state law requiring semi monthly pay for employees appears likely to be averted as large coal firms including Monongahela and Peters Creek, Yonghiogheny, and J N Risher inform miners they will adopt semi monthly wages. An operator expects other firms to follow and the practice to become widespread.
Washington reports Secretary Fairchild received several communications from holders of U S bonds accepting terms of the circular issued on the eighth instant for prepaying six months interest on the public debt with a two percent rebate starting the fifteenth instant. Many requests for copies of the circular and for blank forms of application for prepayment have also come in. Applications filed total bonds interest of eight hundred thirty one thousand dollars.
Ten year old Jesse Funk of 515 North Thirty-fifth Street was struck by car No 216 at Thirty-fifth and Rockland Streets and died at home fifteen minutes later. Edward Keys a 24 year old conductor of the Lombard and South Streets Line at 821 Tasker Street was arrested by Sixteenth district police.
George W. Jackson of 2288 McClellan Street was committed to prison by Magistrate Brown in default of 2000 bail for assaulting Caspar Hawn of 136 Siegel Street. The Friday night fight left Hawn with a swollen eye a sprained ankle and a broken wrist and he was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital.
M Magnier editor of the Bcenement fought a duel with M Reinach of the Republique Francaise in Paris. Weapons used were swords. Reinach was wounded.
Paris reports M Ferry will not have his seconds pursue further action in the duel incident with General Petenger. The matter appears closed with no additional steps planned by Ferry’s camp.
Barbara Walker, four weeks married to Joseph Walker, attempted to leap into the Delaware after discovering her money and marriage certificate were stolen. The one day courtship ended with him spending her savings on a wedding suit and then absconding with $22, leaving her distraught and facing a coroner's inquest potential case. Barbara, who worked to save funds from her late husband Simon Shockenberg, states Joseph exploited her savings and refused work, prompting her near-fatal act. She was arrested at Shackamaxon street wharf and later released after promising not to pursue a coroner's inquiry.
A storm engulfed Franklin causing floods in the western part. A 15000 barrel Eclipse Oil Company tank ignited by lightning threatened the big oil works, delaying trains as burning oil pooled along railroad tracks. Firemen were injured, two men fatally burned, others seriously hurt, and damage is pegged at about 20000 dollars. fire under control by 2 PM.
Doctor Watson alias English and many other names, a stern built man, faced a partial hearing before Magistrate Smit at Central Station charged with swindling young men. He advertised in daily papers for a young man with capital to manage an office, promising security for good conduct. Fran R. Rhoads and J. L. Travel were defrauded. two thousand dollars bail was set for a further hearing next Friday afternoon.
West Chester August 6 The Court House steeple ignited by live electric clock lighting wires formed a pillar of flame at 9 pm. Firemen arrived quickly but could not save the interior where records were kept. The blaze was quenched and public calm restored as destruction limited to the tower interior.
Judge Krebs found for the Commonwealth against John E. Du Bois for 136700 with 12 percent interest from May 5 1887. The ruling will be appealed to the Supreme Court.
Three farmers bound for the city to attend market were attacked by highwaymen before daylight. Each man was relieved of his money, small sums in every case. The robbers are believed to be tramps, occurring this morning in the vicinity.
John Kenner a York road and Nicetown lane dairyman charged with dumping stale brewery refuse in a lot denies the allegations. The Health Board received the charges from Dr Goldsboro and Kenner says all the claims are false.
A match for the American short-distance swimming championship will be held Saturday in the Delaware from the Black House buoy to Gloucester. Competitors include Danks of Smoky Hollow, Denols Fy Butler, and R. P. Magee of Boston.
