A Mrs. McBride alias Mrs. J W McBride and four dependents posed as a wealthy family, swindling tailors jewellers grocers florists and others for about 15000 while living in luxury two years in Philadelphia. They left suddenly after accruing dozens of unpaid bills and debts as creditors prepared to sue.
Washington April 26 A cablegram from Mr. Squier reports the Empress Dowager has named a Board of National Administration to relieve her of public functions. The trio includes Cabinet members with the Empress at Sian Fu and Pekin based Prince Ching Viceroy Li and Prince Kung. The move signals relinquishment of autonomous power and facilitates foreign ministers dealings with China. Jung Lu, active in last summer’s anti foreign actions, is among the cabinet trio. one member is elderly and reportedly frail.
The Gaulois says Colonel Marchand formed a scheme to seize the Dowager Empress of China and her suite by methods used against Aguinaldo, but the Ministers of the Powers refused consent to carry it out.
In Pekin notices in Chinese call for patriotic Chinese to rise on May 15 and expel all foreigners. Portia Knight an actress sues the Duke of Manchester for breach of promise saying verbal marriage pledges caused damage. She cites promises on April 19 1900 and September 1900. The Duke admits friendliness but denies any marriage suggestion and the suit followed his marriage to Miss Zimmerman of Cincinnati.

Clayton New Mexico April 26 train robber Thomas FE Ketchum alias Black Jack was hanged at 1 21 PM. The rope broke and the fall jerked his head off. He spoke with visitors for hours, claiming death is preferable to prison and admitting robberies but insisting he never killed a man and only shot three. He denied being Black Jack, exonerated Stein's Pass defendants, and named Bud Upshaw as innocent of Texas murder. He mailed a letter to President McKinley urging clemency and naming the actual criminals.
