The Paria Exposition opens with ceremonies mixing splendor and confusion in Paris. The new expo site shows only buildings for now as the event begins. An interview with President Loubet in The Times reveals strong sympathy for the United States and a desire for closer Franco American friendship.
Emile Loubet, president of France, granted the World an interview at the Elysee during the Paris Exposition opening. He praised American enterprise, unity of sentiment, and the two nations’ shared ideals, calling Americans and French "warm brothers" and commending United States organizers led by Commissioner General Peck. He doubted further Paris expositions but lauded the Chicago fair’s value in spreading knowledge and reducing prejudice.
London reports the only development from South Africa cables is heavy bombardment of British trenches at Warenton on April 13 with no damage. Major General Sir Frederick Carrington leaves Cape Town for Beira. Boer sources say General Botha returns from Glencoe and British camp shifts toward Elandslaagte.
London April 14 British travelers show little interest in the Paris Exposition opening next week. Anti English French press venom has cooled enthusiasm after prior plans to visit, with Punch cartoon showing bowing to Mistress Paris not reflecting public opinion as per the Globe.
Paris April 14 The Marquis de Gallifet Minister of War, who has been suffering from foot joint inflammation, caught cell yesterday and today pneumonia developed. His physician says the condition is very serious.
Harry Williams was hanged in Toronto on April 14 for the Varcoe murder during a store robbery attempt with a man named McIntosh. Varcoe died after being shot in the struggle. McIntosh was killed escaping. Williams claimed McIntosh fired the shot. Williams, from a respected German family, offered no statement.
George Nichols sentenced at the April term of the Court of General Sessions for assault on Willis H. Dukes of Caroline county serves one hour in the pillory. He must pay a $500 fine and remain in prison for thirty days.
John McBreen 9, living south of Market east of Broad, was arrested Friday by Officer Gibson in front of an empty house. He claimed different names before Magistrate Henderson and was warned on release. Thomas Sharp 14, of North Seventh Street, arraigned for stealing a diamond ring and held on $600 bail.

Witbeck, ex president of the Chicago General Railway Company, files a bill in Circuit Court seeking a receiver as the company faces $400000 in notes and accounts, $412000 in interest, $200000 first mortgage bonds, and $1800000 second mortgages with assets far below the mortgage indebtedness.
