Reports say Boer forces mass to the south threatening the railway near Bloemfontein as remounts arrive. British pickets at Springfield eight miles away were attacked today by Boers advancing from the water works. British spirits are high and readiness to advance grows.
Bethany in the Orange Free State on April 7 reports five British infantry companies surprised by the Beddersburg Commando made a bold stand but surrendered after the Boers deployed three field guns to none on the British side. Gatacre arrived too late, Redderhsburg was reoccupied, and British losses are feared large.
General De Wet attacked and defeated a large British cavalry force southeast of Bloemfontein at De Wets Corp. He captured 450 prisoners and seized ammunition and camp stores. heavy losses were inflicted on the enemy. Federal losses were two killed and four wounded. other commands reported quiet.
The Royal Irish Rifles moved back from Rouxville and arrived safely at Allwal North with a detachment from General Brabant securing their withdrawal. Lieutenant Bonsey and two Border Horse soldiers are missing. Two Boers died in the rear guard. a Boer commando is reported at Walsekop, fourteen miles west of Rouxville.
Official report from Pretoria states that at Bloemfontein water works Republican forces captured 11 officers and 362 men along with 11 guns two ammunition wagons and additional wagons and mules.
A runner from Sobobo's Kraal Swaziland reports Sobobo killed and women bound with ropes. Unrest grows as natives are threatened and in one district killed. Boers seek passage to the Queen through Swaziland armed. Chief M Quezie and family reportedly killed and kraal sacked. Marauding bands roam the region.
In Maseru Basutoland April 5 natives watch Boers reoccupy Ladybrand Thaba N Chu and the Bloemfontein water works with concern. They fear British reverses and evacuation of Wepener could trigger disaster for natives while they hope General Brabant advances against the enemy.
A Telegram from Simonstown reports thirty Boers escaped from the off camp last evening. Nine have been recaptured. The escape was by cutting a fence under the sentry bridge while the sentry stood above. A driver was offered £200 to aid the escape. A tunnel was discovered later.

28 year old Crozier of Acorn Webb Company Wales disappeared from home Saturday evening. He was seen with two unknown men walking toward the railroad just before midnight. A loss of $10 and missing papers in his coat suggest assault for robbery. He remained comatose with a severe head wound and unknown cause of accident.
President Steyn told the Free State Volkeraad at Kroonstad that burghers are in a better position than at the start of hostilities. He warned surrendering burghers and noted Free State borrowing half a million from the Transvaal for war. He accused England of breaking conventions and cited calls for intervention by Germany and others. He warned of retaliatory measures if Boer prisoners are sent to a British prison.
