The Red Cross war fund drive opens next Monday May 20 with Alaska assigned a 40000 target. Petersburg plans a 1000 subscription and donors are urged to leave gifts at the Bank of Petersburg. A May 17 dance at S of N hall will benefit the Red Cross.
Ten Petersburg residents are listed for the draft quota and ordered to report May 23 to the local exemption board. They will sail on the City of Seattle the same day for Fort Seward, with Paul Setter in Seattle possibly sent to Camp Lewis and three others away fishing, delaying their return.
Ole Ekrem dock foreman at Scow Bay for Alaska Fish and Cold Storage Company loses two fingers after being jerked by a winch cable. His right hand is crushed requiring amputation and his arm bruised. Dr Kyng reports he rests at the hospital. Philadelphia notes ten thousand ton ships being commissioned daily with plans to reach three per day next year.
Diamond Bush Company prepares a large herring pack at Warm Springs Bay with gasboats Caroline Stanley Ida arriving from Seattle. Einar Beyer president and John Hinno vice president plan a big season with John Vick as fishing foreman and two Scottish experts commanding the packing crew. Peters burg will serve as northern business HQ.

The Hum boldt sailed at 8 o clock last night with passengers for Peters burg. The Spokane and City of Seattle are scheduled to sail soon. The Admiral Farragut may be ready by May 25 after repairs, and a cofferdam is being built to raise the Admiral Evans sunken at Hawk Inlet. The Admiral Watson likely won t be seen in Southeastern Alaska waters this season. On return from Bristol Bay she will make five trips direct to Nome.

Passes require three 1 inch photos and triplicate copies for Juneau and local marshal offices. No pass, no wharf access except boarding a steamer as a passenger. steamer presence bans pass holders on the wharf.
