The Third Liberty Loan closes Saturday and residents wishing to add to Petersburg's quota should apply at the bank before 4 p.m. that day. The bank reports subscriptions total $29,050 from 134 individual subscriptions through Wednesday evening.
Petersburg’s honor flag was raised on Monday and immediately suspended across Main Street in front of the post office.
Captain William D. Hanlan brings a load of bait herring to Sitka aboard the Lake Bay with Mike Church as engineer. A. H. Sonsthagen packs 400 barrels for Southern Alaska Canning and 100 barrels for Mr Mills. Sitka boats, machines, and a new one line cannery by William Lemar are noted. Sitka Canning Company has packed 200 cases of clams under Mr Rice and Mr Mills.
A Petersburg message to the local exemption board fixes a fourteen man quota for the first draft call and requests a firm earliest entrainment date. Ninety eight men areClass 1 A, with some heading to fishing craft. Southeast Alaska callers will go to Fort Seward for training. Other territorial quotas include Juneau 88 and Anchorage 184 among many listed towns.
Capt Jack Hadland arrived with the gasboat William and John towing logs for Diamond Fish Co. Curacoa discharged lumber at Warm Springs for the same firm. The government will take over all raw wool in warehouses at the June 30 price. noncompliant holders face commandeering. Looms with 40 percent output on government work must shift 60 percent to the state, civilians receive rest at fixed prices. In Petersburg the primary featured a weak field with 61 Republican ballots. Wickersham swept the GOP, with two ballots invalid. Democratic turnout was 58, led by Sulzer with 38 votes and Maloney with 20. several write-ins dominated the rest. Territorial senator nominee Britt and representatives Casey Connors Sowerby White emerged from Sulzer’s faction in the latest results.
Washington May 1 The Alaska Steamship Company applied to the Interstate Commerce Commission for higher one way passenger fares between Seattle and Alaska points by fifty cents to fifteen dollars and for excess baggage rates from five cents to three dollars per hundred pounds.

American troops beat back a German assault near Villers and Bretonneux after a two hour bombardment, inflicting heavy German losses and leaving many dead in front of the American line.
The Jefferson sailed north at 9 30 this morning carrying Albert and Alexander Arness Maxwell Hamilton and three steerage passengers for Petersburg. The Spokane left at 2 this afternoon with 26 first class passengers for Petersburg. The Admiral Watson, overdue from Seattle last Sunday, proceeds north through Southeastern Alaska toward Bristol Bay.
