U S Food Commissioner Hoover advises that canneries using traps or gear must apply for fishing licenses. Fishermen paid a fixed price for services are paid as wages and need no license. Operators in pickled or salted fish or clam canning are not required to hold licenses beyond a fishing license.
T. S. Elsemore appointed local enrolling agent for the U S Public Service Reserve. All persons whose trade would aid ship construction urged to enroll.

Shakan mine Superintendent Wayland and crew arrive on the City of Seattle for transit to Shakan, leaving Wednesday on the Tillacum. Spokane arrivals list several locals. City council meets. sidewalks on G and D streets and E street sewer approved. bills over $1,078.85 paid. National Junior Red Cross admission granted to local school. Friday afternoon hours adjusted. N Nelson of Glacier Fish Co ships 72 boxes of halibut from Scow Bay on City of Seattle. Pioneer with 36 000 lbs sells to Nelson at 16c and unloads in 12 hours at Scow Bay. Several boats set to sail this week including Dolphin Clara Odin Glacier Rival Swan Pendant Fram with various captains.
At a stockholders meeting of the S N Trading Union Erik Ness was chosen successor to Jacob Otress as manager. Otress has begun duties as manager of the Arness sawmill. Education Commissioner L D Henderson arrived from Wrangell aboard the Americ Sunday and returned to Juneau aboard the Spokane after visiting Scow Bay schools. Unclaimed January letters include Geo Brailand and others. Chester Johnson reports safe arrival in France with American forces.
Spokane South sails north Feb 12 with regular calls then stops at Kake Killisnoo Funter Bay Hawk Inlet and Tenakee canneries. Amerie leaves Wednesday on regular run with no passengers. Evans from the south Saturday.
Sunday and midweek attractions at the Variety Theatre feature The Flying Torpedo and The Fifth Ace among film reels, with Satan Sanderson and Alias Mr Jones on schedule for February 14 to 16. Bill Bunk the Bandit and Mr Jones provide comedy alongside drama in the program. Admission includes war tax with prices 80 cents for adults, 10 cents for under 10, and 15 cents for ages 10 to 15.
Arthur Henderson, former War Council member, urged in London that immediate peace is the world’s greatest need and must come through united working class action. He warned against a single section negotiating and cited sacrifices as the basis for a democratic peace.
In Washington, the government moves to direct the fuel oil industry via a presidential proclamation authorizing the Fuel Administrator to oversee supply and distribution. Citizens with nets or skins stored at the saw mill are urged to remove them immediately.
The British troopship Tuscania carrying 2179 US soldiers was torpedoed and sunk in the war zone. 210 dead reported, 110 survivors landed in Ireland. Soldiers included members of the 32d National Guard from Wisconsin and Michigan and parts of the 20th Engineers.

Military Relief sent a Seattle warehouse box of knitted goods 11.2 dozen socks 10 sweaters 1 pair wristlets and 1 muffler. In Peters berg and Scow Bay 132 families have signed food conservation pledge cards representing 488 people. Reports have been very gratifying.
Financial report for the Petersburg branch of the American Red Cross Juneau Chapter covers Dec 19 1917 to Jan 20 1918. Receipts include balances donations and social event proceeds totaling 707 99 with a year end balance of 700 49. Disbursements list enamel pins and other payments.
