A fire last Sunday morning at a south Petersburg house, likely from a defective flue, killed Miss Laura Guerrin after she reentered for money and fatally burned P.N. Nielsen who tried to rescue her. Nielsen died later that night in Wrangell hospital.
At noon Monday the funeral of Laura Guerrin took place. Rev Maakestad offered a brief address and prayer to those assembled in S. of N. hall. The remains were laid to rest in Petersburg cemetery. The young woman, 24, had come to Petersburg from the east about a month ago. her mother is believed to live in San Francisco, and efforts are under way to contact her.
The dead body of Mr. Neilsen was brought from Wrangell Monday night. Burial was Wednesday at A. B. hall with Arctic Brotherhood funeral rites. Nielsen, born in Denmark 42 years ago, had no known relatives in this country. He moved to Petersbur g from Seattle two and a half years ago after living in Leavenworth and Oshkosh. He held a life membership in Oshkosh Aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. His kindness made him friends wherever he went.
Reports list ships sailing from Seattle and arrivals at Petersburg and Juneau with crews and plans. Contractors defer dock work at Petersburg Wrangell due to winter lumber delays, resuming in spring. Firemen’s masquerade ball at S of N hall tonight. Shamrock II to be laid up in Tacoma for winter. Card of thanks from Paul Lund for support after N. P. Nielsen’s death. Local services advertise plumbing and ship supplies.
Postmaster Refling to offer war savings stamps and certificates as supplies arrive. Certificates cost $4.12 in Dec 1917 and Jan 1918, rising monthly in 1918. thrift stamps cost 25 cents each and convert to certificates with a card. limited to $100 per purchase and $1,000 per person. Certificates mature January 1, 1923 at redeemable value of $5.
Berlin announces suspension of hostilities along the Russian front to begin Friday noon. British reports claim encirclement of Jerusalem with entry likely. London tally notes seventeen British vessels torpedoed during the week ending Wednesday.
Mass meetings are called in Seattle churches next Sunday to support the movement for impeaching Hi Gilk. The mayor says he will not remove Chief of Police Beckingham from office.

Proprieter R Enge donates net proceeds from a Variety Theatre show tonight for the Red Cross. The event aims to raise funds and support relief efforts with proceeds going to the Red Cross.
Washington reports indicate the Senate will insist that a declaration of war against Austria extend to Bulgaria and Turkey. Earlier in early December President Wilson addressed a joint session, stating the immediate aim is to win the war and pledging full use of all resources until victory. He dismissed calls for peace before success.
Washington officials estimate the state will subscribe to war-savings bonds at a rate of 20 dollars per person based on anticipated population. The guidance ties the quota to population projections and aims to mobilize funds for the war effort.
Halifax on December 6 reports hundreds dead and thousands injured after a munitions ship exploded in the harbor following a collision during a storm off Rockingham. The blast ruins half the city, with freight cars blown along ten miles.

The officers and crew of the wrecked fishing steamer Manhattan were bound over in commissioner's court at Juneau on November 24 to answer to the next grand jury for looting the wrecked steamer Al-Ki.
Martin Nelson of the Knickerbocker crew died from inhaling gas fumes while the fishing schooner was off Point Augusta. Shipmate John Nelson was affected but revived and hospitalized in Juneau. Also listed is a for sale gasboat outfit offered by Gauffin's.
