Fire and dog fight make hot Sunday in Otwell

A Sunday morning fire destroyed most of Joy O Brittain's two story home in Otwell. While residents battled the blaze two dogs from locals fought nearby drawing a crowd, delaying firefighting efforts and leaving Brittain with near total loss and no insurance on the dwelling. The blaze started from an oil stove explosion and the fire did not spread to adjacent buildings.

Arthur Woolsey Slain Protecting Woman in Missouri

Arthur Woolsey a Pike county native long known in Petersburg was killed in Tallapoosa Missouri last Friday while trying to stop a man from harming a woman. The knife wound to the heart proved fatal and the murderer fled. Funeral services were held in Tallapoosa with many local friends attending. Survived by his wife and several children. Norman Woolsey of Oakland City attended the funeral. Woolsey had moved to Missouri about fifteen years earlier and built a successful saw mill business.

Big Labor Celebration Monday at Petersburg Fair Grounds

Death of Dr W H Stonecipher Retired Evansville Dentist

Dr W H Stonecipher a well known dentist died at Woodmere Evansville on Monday afternoon. His body was moved to Petersburg for a family funeral on North Fourth Street and burial at Walnut Hills. He is survived by his widow two sons and a daughter all married. He had long retired from practice and suffered ill health for years.

Grace Ricketts, a young colored woman, died at her father James Ricketts home Monday at age 19. Funeral services were held Wednesday conducted by Rev Gordon and burial followed at Ayrshire colored cemetery. She leaves her parents, four brothers and sisters.

Miner 22 Dies In Atlas Mines Accident

Paul Beckett aged 22 died after being crushed by a second string of cars at Atlas Mines near Petersburg. He lived in Hymera and had just begun work there. he died at St Marys Hospital Evansville at 1 45 PM Tuesday. Funeral services were held in Hymera. Beckett, unmarried, was son of D Beckett. He was employed at Atlas for the first time after arriving from Hymera. Dr Byers treated him before he was rushed to Evansville but he died of injuries including ruptured intestines and a broken ankle. This is the Atlas mine’s first fatality.

Virgil Meadors suffered a leg injury from a state fall at the Atlas Mines on Monday afternoon. Another worker, Beckett, was fatally injured in the same incident. Meadors was in a different section and has a broken small bone but is expected to resume work soon.
