Atlas Mines Rise in Petersburg Coal Region

The Windy Hill Mine is renamed Atlas Mines under Pike County Coal Company. General manager N. H. McClevey and Superintendent Jeff Ladson plan rapid expansion, machine conversion, and electrical upgrades to employ about 250 new workers before winter. The project spurs housing and water-line developments as existing mines resume operations. community leaders urge backing to support growth.

Decoration Day Observance by Woodmen Camp 5990

Red Cross pledges $1450 at county assembly

A large Red Cross meeting at the opera house pledges $1450 of Pike County's apportionment from a $10,000 goal. Speakers included Hon. Edward Toner editor of the Anderson Herald, Hon. Thomas Adams editor of the Vincennes Commercial, and Knox County Red Cross Chairman Dyer.

Examination of Children in Pike County Indiana

Last Friday four large groups of children were examined at Union. Tuesday babies were examined in Logan township at Oatsville. Yesterday and today work continues at the Petersburg school building and at Dr Miller's office in Winslow. Next week meetings will be held in other townships to register and test all children under six years old free.

Patriotic Meeting at Bowman With Red Cross Service Flag

A big patriotic meeting is planned at White River Chapel in Bowman this Friday. The event will honor a Red Cross service flag dedication and include a program with a patriotic address by a well known speaker. A number from the locality is expected to attend.

Child Welfare Examinations Scheduled in Winslow

The Patoka township child welfare examinations for children under six will be held at the Winslow public school on Saturday and Monday. Doctors DeTar Miller and Garrison with a trained nurse will conduct the examinations. Mrs. Lee Dearing, secretary, County Child Welfare Committee urges attendance.

Oil discovery boosts Rumble farm amid parade news

Sam Rumble owns a 60 acre Madison township site where Murphy Oil drilled a 200 barrel producing well at 1311 feet with another on the same lease due soon. Nearby Bement Oil plans a new well on Arch Gray lease near Grange Hall. Also, Pike County Red Cross parade drew about 200 participants led by the Scotch Highlanders Band with a crowded Opera House concert. The Red Cross drive is expected to surpass its goal.

Human Will Theme Opens Bible Sermon Series

Trustees Fail To Let School House Contract At Orwell

Trustee George H. Thomas failed to award the Orwell township school house contract after three bids exceeded the 24000 dollar appropriation and two bids lacked non collusion affidavits. Bids ranged 28400 to 29562 with changes planned and re advertisement planned. The Black School House bid also not let due to bid form defects, with B F English holding the lowest bid.

Garner Shannon wedding at Fort Barrancas

A quiet ceremony united Miss Bessie L. Shannon of Petersburg Indiana and Corporal L G Garner of the 64th headquarters at Fort Barrancas. Twenty-Two Left Today for Columbus Training Camp

Twenty two boys left here today at noon for Columbus Ohio to enter training. Winslow sent a mess fund of sixty two dollars and others contributed more locally. About one hundred people accompanied the boys to the depot as a mess fund auction on Main Street yielded forty five dollars. Obituaries for Delia Jane Morris Anson Traylor and Isaac Loveless

Delia Jane Morris of Hornady Park died last Thursday at one in the afternoon at age 67. Funeral service was at her home on Saturday at 2 pm with Rev A J Willis in charge and burial at Walnut Hills cemetery. She leaves son George and daughter Mrs Henry Cassidy. Anson Traylor, 46, son of the late Lafayette Traylor, died after a long illness at his Otwell home. Funeral at Burr Oak Tuesday at 2 pm with Rev Ralph O Pearson. burial in the adjacent cemetery. Isaac Loveless of Logan township died Wednesday night. funeral plans unavailable.

Patoka Township Goes Over Top in Red Cross Drive

Patoka township residents raised 1713 in under 30 minutes at a Wednesday Red Cross meeting in Winslow, topping the 1650 quota. Miners from the Ayrshire No. 1 mine pledged 400 and Nos. 4 and 61 mine workers 200. Monroe township surpassed 800 of 935, and the county total exceeded 5,000 of 10,000, with a Saturday night target in view.
