Northern Pike county coal industry reshaped by new total buyout

Indianapolis capitalists are reportedly taking controlling interest in Blackburn and Little mines with stores at Petersburg Littles and Blackburn. The deal includes 2000 acres of coal land and a 90 day option that expired Saturday. The new company plans higher output, 40 cars daily for a year, and to expand workforce while retaining many S W Little Coal officials.

Factory search aids Pike County growth plan

Southern Traffic Agent B P Lowry of the E and I Railroad, Ford P Veeck secretary of the Petersburg Business Men's Association, and James Boonshot toured northern Pike County seeking limestone samples. Specimens were sent to Rose Polytechnic Institute for chemical analysis as part of efforts to develop local resources and locate new factories with strong backing from the railroad and business group.

Smallpox Outbreak Reported Near Augusta Vicinity

Pike county faces a smallpox scare with about 30 to 40 cases in Augusta and nearby areas. Health officers say the disease is in a light form and are taking all measures to prevent further spread.

The Secretary of the Navy telegram urged newspapers to feature the President’s executive order raising authorized naval enlistment to eighty seven thousand. Union Meeting Converts Eureka Mine to Union Property

Members from five to six locals of the Miner's Union gathered at the Eureka Mine near Oakland City last Monday. Three to four hundred union men plus senior officers attended. after the meeting, the non-union mine became union. The locals called the event a complete success and returned home in the evening. Elvis Preston, 14, son of Fred Preston, suffered a broken right arm when his wagon horse bolted on Saturday near Alford. He received prompt medical care and is recovering well.

Will Appeal Election Case From County Meeting

At a Friday county gathering party members from many areas decided to seek a new trial in the election cases and to appeal to the Supreme Court if the motion to appeal is overruled. Funds for expenses will be raised by subscription.

A defective fire at James Tolliver's home on North 10th Street Wednesday morning around nine o'clock caused a small blaze. A bucket brigade fought the flames and the fire was extinguished with minor damage.

Patriotic Meeting Planned at Court House Week Ahead

A meeting will be held at the Court House Monday evening at 7 30 to plan a big patriotic demonstration later in the week. Byron Hearing of Indiana University placed third in the 50 yard dash at the Conference indoor meet in Patten Gym Northwestern. William Akridge prominent old soldier dies at home in West Petersburg at 8 p.m. A Kentucky native who joined the Thirteenth Kentucky Infantry at the Civil War start, he later settled in the county with his wife and five children. River flood fish swarm chased by farmers after slip into cornfields

A flood caused fish to move from the river into nearby cornfields and green wheat sprouts. Some fish weighing up to twenty pounds sought refuge in sloughs while river bottom farmers chased them from the fields.
