Pike County Oil News Quiet in Union Field Activity

The Pike County oil scene is quiet though Union field shows the most activity. A dry hole on the Charles B Crow farm near Alford may be followed by a Bement location on the James Thomas farm in about a month. Bement is in Texas now, tied to other properties after a partner’s death. Clay roads hinder work as oilmen expect materials to drop in price. Bement has released land south of Petersburg toward Sugar Ridge, while a large tract near Oatsville is leased to test promptly by Jacob M Noble for multiple landowners. Wells plugged by George W Smith for Central Refining Co and John Watson for Bement Oil Co also reported.

New Cream Buying Market to Open in The City

The Sugar Creek Co. a leading butter maker with creameries in Illinois Indiana Missouri Kentucky and Texas plans a Saturday opening of a modern cash cream buying station in the city next to the Veek Machine Shop. Carl Veek will operate it with Drake in charge as cream tester ready to aid dairy producers with information and business guidance.

Bank Offering Set At Methodist Parsonage March 7 1919

The annual bank offering at the Methodist parsonage will be held Friday afternoon March 7, 1919. All members are urged to come and bring a friend. Leader Mrs Ada Colvin Long. Various programs include devotionals and talks on Persia Turkey India China Japan, with music and a mystery box.

David Livengood, a Federal Government representative, is in town to assist taxpayers with income tax blanks. He can be found at Sheriff Bryan's office and will provide necessary help. Two Soldiers Denounce Brest Embarkation Camp Conditions

Sergt H J Miley of the 119th Infantry and Private E C Wilson of Battery D 44th Artillery recount harsh Brest France Embarkation Camp conditions from late 1918 to early 1919. They describe constant rain ankle deep mud shelters as tents with leaky floors and foul odors far worse than hog pens. They claim investigators and officers ignored the reports despite relief efforts, noting a brief improvement in facilities compared with other accommodations.

The Washington Township War Mothers will host a reception and banquet to honor khaki-clad soldiers from Pike County. Private Wilson Home After France Campaign and Gas Injury

Private E. C. Wilson of the 44th C. A. C. returns from seven months of combat from St Mihiel Verdun Alsace to be honorably discharged. He was badly burned by mustard gas, spent about twenty days in hospital, and recalls French troops as good fighters. He was warmly welcomed by family and friends.

New Grocery Store to Open Next to Post Office

The Schaefer Brothers repair their business room beside the post office and will stock staple groceries within thirty days. An archway will connect the room now used by their gents' furnishing shop to the future grocery store. The venture will operate on a cash basis and expands the Schaefer Brothers business as one of Pike county's largest.

Pike County Farmer Buys Valuable Sow at Round-Up

Sebastian DeMotte, a Pike county farmer and stock dealer, bought a pedigreed Duroc sow at the Kentucky Round-Up in Louisville. The sow, from Charles J. Tanner of Lebanon Ky, was valued near 1500 dollars. Reece Burns, Monroe township trustee, visited Huntingburg on official business after a strong Democratic showing and hints at future county political potential.

Trustees Meet Over Rural School Wage Law and Commencements

Township Trustees met at the effigée of County Superintendent Howard Brenton with all members present to discuss the new teachers wage law. The proposed increase from forty to sixty percent may outstrip next year’s levy funds, delaying effect until January 1, 1921. County agent discuss and commencements plans were also reviewed, with possible joint high and common school ceremonies and addresses by L. N. Hines in Marion Patoka Lockhart and Clay townships in early May.

The Press received a letter from Ed Y Price of Chillicothe Missouri a former Pike county resident. He accepts the challenge to beat Mrs Jason Miller's record of fresh lettuce served in January. Price claims tomatoes grown in his garden were served sliced in January though not cooked and suggests they were refrigerated. He notes Missouri has enjoyed fine winter weather similar to Indiana.

Inexpensive Term Of Court In Pike County

The February term of court cost little for Pike County with only one jury trial, dismissed before evidence finished. Grand jury and special judge were main expenses. Prohibition law reduced crime statewide. with enforcement, criminal cases may fade from dockets. Local politics show little activity this year as schools suffer flu, with six teachers ill in Washington township and substitutes filling city vacancies. James Carlisle of Nashville, Tennessee, visiting family predicts Tennessee will swing Republican next year.

Claude Johnson 37, a leading farmer near Amanda Willis farm, died of pneumonia after influenza. Funeral at White church. Survived by wife Etta Fowler, a son, and parents. Also reported are Imel Boger and Adolph Boger, youths aged 17 and 9, both died from pneumonia after influenza. memorials mention loss and prayers. Funeral services held at Arnold cemetery.

Death of John R Patton in St Louis

John R Patton formerly of Indianapolis died of pneumonia in St Louis Missouri on February 25 1919 after a brief illness. He had worked with L S Ayers and Co and recently joined a publishing house in St Louis with plans for his wife to join him. He is survived by Harriette Maine Patton his mother H M Janney and several Indiana relatives. His funeral was February 27 1919 in Marshall Illinois. A FRIEND expresses sympathy and notes the couple married July 24 1915 in Covington Kentucky. A letter from Postmaster D D Corn at Daytona Florida reports warm weather and family wellbeing with leisure by bathing fishing and driving.
