Oil boom hits Pike county fields as rigs move in

Oil firms push rush to Peters burg amid high prices with contracts offering three to four years of work. Four sands in the western field are producing from different depths. Murphy Oil on Gladish lease at 1270 feet began pumping 15 bbls hr. Ohio Oil on Fair lease at 960 feet drilled a 50 bbl well and eased water from Gladish well at 1070 feet, first day 76 bbls, second day 136 bbls, now 150 bbls daily. The 1070 foot sand shows potential as a large producer with Barker and Gladish wells yielding 200 bbls daily combined. more locations mapped and rigs moving to new sands south of 1228 and 1260 feet, east of 960 foot sand. Work has just begun on the 1070 foot sand.

Robbery Tale From Logan Township Man

John Grubb of Logan township says, on a city trip last Tuesday a trio attacked him on the way home from Oakland City. They forced whiskey into him and stole 70 dollars in wood oil currency while he was drunken. He reported the incident to Prosecuting Attorney S A Wehes.

Evening Musicale entertains guests with patriotic program

The Evening Musicale at the home of Mrs. and Misses Davidson welcomed about 140 guests for an opulent patriotic program. Vocal and piano numbers by club members entertained while Mrs. J T Kime and Mrs. Ed Gray spoke on the Stars and Stripes and the Second Line of Defense respectively. An out of town guest Miss Anna Poucher of Orleans Indiana attended and a surprise entertainment for her followed later at Mrs. Frank Jeans home. More patriotism and wartime effort were urged by all attendees.

Royal Coal Mines to Open Near Oakland City

Vincennes dispatches report a new coal company named The Royal Coal Mines forming to develop coal lands near Oakland City. It holds options on about 15 000 acres at the junction of the Southern and E I railroads with plans to open the first mine at Oakland City and add more later. No lands have been purchased yet, but options exist and can be exercised at any time.

Fire destroys farm buildings and storage in early morning blaze

A barn and outbuildings were destroyed in a fire at a rural farm. Firefighters reported the blaze killed livestock and cremated fifteen cattle as well as damaged machinery and stored crops. Total loss estimated at 83000, with some items partially insured. For more details call The Press.

James Holton Brenton dies of pneumonia in 1918

James Holton Brenton son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brenton died February 17, 1918 at age one year, one month, and twelve days. Burial was at Walnut Hills cemetery as the bereaved family receive sympathy from friends and relatives.
