Leo M Frank, condemned for the Mary Phagan murder, has had his death sentence commuted to life imprisonment. Sheriff Mangum of Fulton County escorted him to Milledgeville with a small guard and no handcuffs, while Governor Slaton weighed his decision and prepared to announce by 10 o clock.
Final pleas for Leo M Frank’s life reached Governor Slaton from Washington. Senator Ollie M James urged clemency citing doubt in the case. Among those advocating mercy are Vice President Marshall Senator Kern and numerous senators and representatives.
Vienna report from London states the Russians have been retreating along their entire front since early morning west of Lemberg. An exodus has begun from the city as German forces close in. The development signals near certainty of Lemberg’s fall in the ongoing campaign.

Funeral services for Dr Robert William Long who died at 1109 Central Avenue were held at his home. The service attracted many friends, including Indiana University board of trustees president and faculty from the Indianapolis University School of Medicine, along with leading city and state physicians.
Russian forces fall back before Austro German bombardment as German and Austrian howitzers move toward Lemberg. Gas attacks described with Goumine cloud four miles long and retreat to Grodek lake lines. Supposed Russian withdrawals span from the San to the Grodek lakes amid frontier fighting.
Chicago officials named Maclay Hoyne and James N. Sheean to join Mayor Thompson in arbitration of the two day street car and elevated railway strike. The choice of two legal experts beside the mayor was anticipated with Judge Kickham Scanlan as a likely third arbiter.
